For many children, a backpack is simply a back-to-school item. But for some students, it represents something much deeper: dignity, belonging, support, and hope.
At Walk Our Way (WOW), the Pack-A-Pack initiative was created with the belief that every child deserves to walk into school feeling prepared, valued, and seen. Through this community-driven program, the organization provides brand-new backpacks filled with essential school supplies for students in need throughout Northern Colorado. What makes this initiative especially meaningful is that each pack is filled and personalized by one student for another.
This program is about far more than notebooks and pencils; it is about connection. Many underprivileged youth face challenges most people never see. According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and the Polaris Project, children experiencing poverty, housing instability, neglect, a lack of support systems, or unmet basic needs are at significantly higher risk for exploitation and trafficking. Traffickers often target vulnerable youth who are searching for comfort, safety, food, shelter, acceptance, or someone who simply makes them feel cared for.
That reality is heartbreaking, but it is also exactly why prevention matters.
WOW believes that prevention starts long before crisis intervention. It starts with community and making children feel supported before they become vulnerable to someone with harmful intentions. Something as simple as a backpack may not change a child’s entire life overnight, but it reminds them that they matter, that someone thought about them, and that they are not invisible.
Northern Colorado students volunteer at "Camp Pack-A-Pack” at the end of the summer, learning empathy, leadership, and the importance of giving back as they personally pack each bag. The goal is to help them understand that not every child starts the school year with the same resources, and that even small acts of kindness can create ripple effects.
At Walk Our Way, who they are is defined by a shared dedication to children and adolescents. They empower youth by providing positive extracurricular activities and experiences to guide them toward safe, healthy, and fulfilling paths, ultimately helping to end the cycle of child sexual exploitation and trafficking. This profound mission is fueled by the relentless hard work, passion, and vision of WOW's board members, who pour their hearts into ensuring children grow up feeling safe, empowered, supported, and worthy of opportunity.
Every year, the goal is to reach more students, involve more youth volunteers, and continue building a culture where children look out for one another, proving that kindness can truly change the direction of their story. Because when a child feels seen, supported, and connected to their community, we reduce vulnerability and create hope.
