Patio Picks and Pours

Shanny’s Shoutouts: Spots Worth the Heat

When the Texas sun is high and the breeze is just right, there’s nothing better than relaxing on a shaded patio with a tasty bite and something cold to sip. Whether you’re escaping the summer heat or simply soaking up the season, the Hill Country offers plenty of spots where the drinks are chilled to perfection, the dishes are mouthwatering, and the views are worth lingering over. Here are three local patios serving up perfect pairings—signature sips and a standout entrée or two at each—to help you make the most of your next al fresco adventure!

Hill Country Ice House

Local friends and former Rusty Mule owners Robert Blankenship and Andy Stedman have done it again with Hill Country Ice House, a brand-new rustic retreat “where Texas gathers.” Set on five oak-covered acres in Dripping Springs, this laid-back spot offers live music, cornhole, and a perfect setting for sipping Texas craft beer (16 taps!) or cooling off with a homemade cocktail.

The energy behind the bar is infectious, thanks to the friendly, upbeat staff, especially bartender Enzo, who clearly knows his craft. He stirred up two standouts for us: the Rusty Mule, a smoky, earthy twist on the classic made with local Desert Door sotol and smoked agave, and the Bluebonnet Bramble, a refreshing blend of Waterloo gin and blackberry liqueur that felt like summer in a glass. Both cocktails were expertly balanced, beautifully presented, and served with a smile.

At the heart of Hill Country Icehouse is Tru Bar-B-Que, led by Dripping Springs native James Diaz and serving a rotating menu of smoked tri-tip, turkey legs, spare ribs, brisket flautas, smash burgers, wings, and tacos—all made from fresh, never-frozen ingredients, including house-made tortillas. With weekly specials and game-day plates in the works, Hill Country Ice House is already shaping up to be a favorite for food, drinks, and good Hill Country vibes.

Hays City Store

What started as a gas station in the early 1980s has grown into one of the Hill Country’s most beloved local gems. Hays City Store is always on my list when visitors want a true Texas experience with character, history, and flair.

This spot has it all: five televisions, a wood-fired pizza oven, comfort food, over 40 beers on tap, and expertly crafted cocktails. The chicken tinga nachos are unforgettable, and the frozen margarita flight—featuring jalapeño cucumber, watermelon, strawberry, and a seasonal flavor like fresh mango—is the perfect pairing.

Manager Beau let me in on a few extras: daily drink specials, happy hour (Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.), and live music every night except Monday. Add a little steel guitar in the background and it’s hard not to fall in love with this place.

Dos Olivos Market

Tucked into an unassuming shopping center across from Belterra, Dos Olivos Market is a hidden gem where Old World tradition meets Texas hospitality—best enjoyed on its scenic Hill Country patio.

The new menu is full of bold, vibrant flavors. I started with the whipped feta and grilled naan, which was creamy, bright, and the perfect warm-up. The tuna crudo tostada was next: three tostadas piled high with yellowfin, mango, avocado, and microgreens, brought to life by their imported salsa matcha, “La Comandante,” a rich, spicy blend of toasted chiles, garlic, peanuts, and sesame—pure bliss. (The best part is you can take the flavor home, as they sell this little jar of Mexican magic right in the market.)

I paired it all with a glass of Riley’s Lookout sauvignon blanc—crisp, citrusy, and perfectly refreshing. Swing by for happy hour Monday through Thursday, when all wine, beer, and wine-a-rita flights are discounted. With bold Texas flavors and standout Spanish imports, Dos Olivos is a place to sip, savor, and slow down.

Good Food, Great Drinks, and Even Better Views

What more could you ask for? The next time the sun’s shining and your taste buds are calling, head out to one of these patios. Just don’t forget your shades … and maybe a second round. And if you ever need a partner in “research,” just reach out. I reckon I’ll be “plenty parched” (as my dad used to say) and more than happy to sip, snack, and share a few strong opinions.

Here’s to cold drinks, warm patios, and soaking up every last sip of summer. Cheers, y’all!

Hello, Drip readers! I’m Shannon (“Shanny”) Holzwarth, and I’m genuinely excited to share a few of my favorite “watering holes” in the Texas Hill Country—a term my dad affectionately used during our countless road trips in search of the perfect spot.

I grew up in Spring, Texas, and from an early age, I was drawn to the joy of discovering new places and trying new food. While most of my friends were busy with Atari or shopping for the latest Barbie accessories, my favorite pastime was playing “restaurant.” (A close second was teaching a “class” of stuffed animals on an old green chalkboard from a garage sale!) I loved creating seasonal menus with drinks, appetizers, entrées, and desserts—dreaming up dining experiences long before I could actually experience them.

Over the years, friends and family have often encouraged me to start a blog to share my recommendations and custom itineraries. So here we are—my very first official “Shanny Shout-Out.”

The Hill Country is packed with hidden gems, and I’m more than happy to do the “research” for you. Cheers to good eats, great company, and unforgettable finds!
