Step away from the hectic demands of day-to-day life, and step into the tranquility that is Salon West Studio and Spa. From the furnishings to the music and the wall decorations, “Everything is designed to be comfortable,” salon owner Joni Bourdo says. “Having worked in this industry for so many years, I’ve worked where there are lots of hairdressers in one space, and I knew that when I had my own salon, I wanted something very quiet, very peaceful and very intimate. So, it’s quiet here—very much the spa atmosphere, a place where people can come and feel like they’re going to have a treat that day.”
When Salon West Studio and Spa moved to its current location in 2012, Joni made sure that each service has its own area.
“Everything that’s done here is an experience,” she says. “From the beginning to the end, it’s something you don’t forget because everything is done with such care and such skill. Each experience is unique.”
Some of Joni’s earliest memories with her dad, also a hairdresser, has to do with time in his salon.
“From the time I was a little, tiny girl, he would take us every Sunday to his salon, and we’d clean the entire salon! We had wigs to play with, did each other’s hair. My dad always had clips and brushes and rollers we could play with.”
Joni’s area of specialty, like her father before her, is as a colorist. She’s studied Framesi Italian coloring and styling techniques and says that working with hair is exciting.
“Nothing is the same. It’s the type of creative job that every day is different.”
Joni says that she never takes for granted that people are letting her change their look. “When you look in the mirror, you want to have someone looking back at you that you like to see. When we work with people, it changes them. That’s a huge responsibility.”
Joni and her staff have a combined 75-plus years of experience in hair styling, massage therapy, electrolysis, skin and nail care.
“The people that I work with, we’re like a family,” Joni says. “The people here love and have a passion for what they do. They’re going to make sure it’s the very best. And not just the finished product—it’s the service, the care, the communication and time spent with that person. It’s the attention to those details that I think makes us special.”
