Students driving change

Students at Fulton Science Academy are proud to make volunteering and service a priority. Here are three student-driven initiaves that keep kids thinking, creating and giving back.

National Honor Society — Tanzania Service Project
Fulton Science Academy’s National Honor Society students devoted months of planning and volunteer hours to a global service project in Tanzania. They raised $17,500 to fund five water wells, directly improving access to clean water for entire communities. Students also traveled to Tanzania to join and help dedicate two of the large well-opening ceremonies, experiencing first-hand the impact of their work. In addition, they donated $2,000 to a local orphanage, visited with the children and spent a half day volunteering on site while presenting shirts and sweatshirts. The project required evenings, weekends and sustained commitment, but gave students an unforgettable opportunity to serve others in meaningful ways. Faculty advisors Mrs. Cetinkaya and Mr. Akel guided and mentored students throughout the process.

Astronomy Society — Volunteer Outreach Through STEM

Over the past three years, Fulton Science Academy’s Astronomy Society has devoted thousands of volunteer hours to designing and building a custom telescope, conducting high-altitude balloon experiments and prototyping a CubeSat. Equally important, they have made community outreach a cornerstone of their mission. Students regularly organize star parties, public demonstrations and school-wide workshops to spark curiosity and share their passion for space. Through summer and year-round astronomy and small satellite camps, the team not only inspires younger students with the wonders of the universe but also pays it forward by training the next generation of scientists and engineers—nurturing a lasting culture of curiosity, research and exploration. This volunteer-driven spirit has drawn many in the community into astronomy. While under the guidance of faculty mentor Dr. Adams, students have learned to balance ambitious engineering goals with a deep commitment to service and mentorship.

Rocketry Team — Volunteering Time to Inspire and Compete

Fulton Science Academy’s Rocketry Team, invited to nationals as the only team representing Georgia, dedicates countless volunteer hours after school, on weekends and even during breaks to perfecting their rockets. Much of their work is hands-on: students design and fabricate custom components with 3D printers rather than relying on pre-made parts. Their commitment extends far beyond competition—team members regularly volunteer to lead demos, workshops and summer and weekend camps that train the next generation of rocket engineers and scientists. They also raise funds to support charity initiatives and outreach programs for students in need. Guided by faculty mentor Dr. Adams, the team embodies both engineering excellence and a spirit of service, investing their time and skills to uplift the community.
