Pick Your Veggies

Be bold! Explore a new veggie landscape this year

When it comes to picking vegetables, color is an important factor to consider. Not only do colorful vegetables provide a visually appealing dish, but they also provide a range of health benefits. Here are some tips for selecting colorful and healthy vegetables:

Choose a variety of colors: The different colors of vegetables are a result of the different types of nutrients they contain. For example, red vegetables are often high in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that can help protect against heart disease and cancer. Green vegetables, on the other hand, are high in lutein and zeaxanthin, which are important for maintaining good vision.

Look for vibrant colors: When selecting vegetables, choose ones that have vibrant, deep colors. Dull or pale-colored vegetables may be past their prime and may not provide the same nutritional benefits as fresher, more vibrant-colored vegetables.

Avoid bruised or damaged vegetables: In addition to looking for vibrant colors, also avoid selecting vegetables that are bruised or damaged. These vegetables may be more prone to spoilage and may not provide the same nutritional benefits as undamaged vegetables.

Choose organic when possible: While organic vegetables can be more expensive, they may provide additional health benefits. Organic vegetables are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, which can be harmful to your health and the environment.

When choosing your vegetables, why not head out to the farmer's market? Shopping local will help your local economy, your budget, and your diet. Local ingredients grown locally absorb local nutrients from the same environment you already live in.

By following these tips, you can make the most of your shopping experience at the market and support your local farmers:

Plan ahead: Before you head to the farmer's market, make a list of the items you want to buy. This will help you stay focused and avoid impulse purchases.

Go early: The best time to go to the farmer's market is early in the morning, when the produce is at its freshest. Many farmer's markets also have a limited selection of items, so going early can ensure that you have a wider variety of produce to choose from.

Shop the perimeter: The perimeter of the farmer's market is typically where you'll find the freshest produce. This is where the farmers set up their stands and sell their products directly to consumers.

Ask questions: Don't be afraid to ask the farmers questions about their produce. They can provide valuable information about how the produce was grown, how to store it, and how to prepare it.

Bring cash: Many farmer's markets do not accept credit or debit cards, so it's best to bring cash with you. This will also help you stick to your budget and avoid overspending.

In conclusion, selecting colorful and healthy vegetables is an important step in maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet. By choosing a variety of colors, looking for vibrant colors, avoiding bruised or damaged vegetables, and choosing organic, when possible, you can ensure that you are getting the most health benefits from your vegetables.
