Girls wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports in America, and the Windsor Middle School Girls Wrestling Team is helping fuel that momentum. Under the leadership of Coaches Kevin Ramsay and Dave Vondy, young athletes are discovering that wrestling offers far more than competition: it builds confidence, character, and life skills that extend well beyond the mat.
As opportunities for girls wrestling continue to expand, more young women are embracing the sport and the challenges it presents. According to the coaches, wrestling teaches resilience, accountability, leadership, and self-confidence. Athletes learn to overcome obstacles, set goals, and persevere through adversity: valuable lessons that benefit them in school, future careers, and everyday life. The sport also creates new pathways for female athletes, with more colleges and universities offering wrestling programs and scholarship opportunities.
Ramsay and Vondy also lead Windsor Wrestling Academy, where wrestlers of all ages and experience levels are welcome. Whether an athlete is stepping onto the mat for the first time or competing at the state or national level, the mission remains the same: helping each individual improve while developing strong character and work ethic. Through quality instruction, athletes are encouraged to challenge themselves, support their teammates, and reach their full potential.
For the coaches, one of the most rewarding aspects of the sport is watching young wrestlers grow in confidence. Many begin their journey unsure of their abilities but evolve into leaders, mentors, and successful competitors. Just as important are the friendships and sense of community built along the way. The program emphasizes a family-oriented culture where every athlete feels supported, valued, and motivated to succeed.
Looking ahead, Ramsay and Vondy hope to continue expanding opportunities for both boys and girls wrestling throughout Windsor. Their vision is to increase participation, develop future leaders, and build upon the community’s tradition of excellence.
