With a love for both art and science, Dr. Alisa Madson seamlessly blends her passions through the meticulous craft of orthodontics. This fusion finds its expression in Pura Vida Orthodontics, a practice she proudly owns, with locations in Spring Lake Park, Lino Lakes, and St. Louis Park. Dr. Madson stands as a shining example of a female leader redefining success in an ever-evolving industry.

Her journey into healthcare was driven by a profound desire to make a transformative impact on people's lives, one smile at a time. For Dr. Madson, this mission is deeply rewarding, especially when she works with teenagers—individuals at a critical juncture in their development. During this time, the newfound ability to smile openly can dramatically enhance self-esteem and social connectivity. Reflecting on this, Dr. Madson notes, "If you're too shy to smile, it's really hard to connect with people," illustrating how orthodontics plays a pivotal role in personal transformation.

With over two decades in dentistry, including over 15 years focused in orthodontics, Dr. Madson has witnessed significant advancements in her field. Today, Pura Vida Orthodontics utilizes cutting-edge technologies to create personalized, efficient, and comfortable treatment plans. The incorporation of advanced diagnostic tools such as 3D imaging and modeling marks a shift from outdated methods, emphasizing precision and patient comfort. Dr. Madson proudly states, "We don't have those goopy impressions anymore and we can often do remote monitoring, meaning fewer trips into the office, and a lot of saved time for busy families.”

Pura Vida's philosophy extends beyond merely straightening teeth, advocating for a holistic approach to oral health. Dr. Madson emphasizes the intrinsic connection between oral health, facial structure, and overall wellness—a perspective that informs every personalized treatment plan. This commitment to preventive care and early intervention is embodied in initiatives like the Turtle Club growth monitoring program, designed to pinpoint optimal treatment times for children, ensuring healthier futures.

Dr. Madson’s leadership goes beyond her practice, reflecting the strides women have made in industries once dominated by men. As a trailblazer, she recalls the challenges faced due to gender disparities, which tested her resolve. "The industry has really shifted into being closer to a 50/50, male/female split, but for a while, it was traditionally male," she remarks. Her experiences underscore the importance of self-advocacy—a lesson that inspired her to establish Pura Vida Orthodontics. By carving her own path, Dr. Madson sought autonomy over her work environment, cultivating a predominantly female team that thrives on connectivity, empowerment, and mutual support.

“I didn’t set out to make my team mostly female; I hired the best candidate for each position. However, I’m grateful for how it turned out,” she shares, emphasizing the strength derived from personal and professional camaraderie. “I love my team, and we connect on a personal level, leaning on each other in times of stress and happiness.”

Maintaining a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture remains a priority for Dr. Madson. Leading a team of orthodontists, including Dr. Josh Padavano, Dr. Lesley Chu, and Dr. Molly Erdman, the practice thrives in an environment that values camaraderie and community service. Through annual service projects—be it volunteering at the Humane Society or engaging with Feed My Starving Children—the team embodies a steadfast commitment to giving back.

Dr. Madson also dedicates herself to inspiring the next generation of female leaders in orthodontics and beyond. "I love being a role model for younger girls and the industry at large," she says, embodying the power of passion and leadership. “A few years ago I was the president of the Minnesota Association of Orthodontists, and really enjoyed my time engaging with others.” Her journey is a testament to the achievements possible when art meets science and ambition aligns with altruism.

As Pura Vida Orthodontics continues to set the standard for excellence, Dr. Madson’s legacy grows. It is a legacy marked by transformed smiles, uplifted lives, and the expanding influence of women at the forefront of industry, leaving an indelible impact both within and beyond the world of orthodontics.
