Pitch Perfect

Alexander Audiology is redefining hearing health with a practice rooted in expertise, empathy and deeply personalized care

For Dr. Melissa Alexander, the work of audiology has always been about something deeper than technology or diagnostics. At its heart, it is about connection—helping people stay engaged with the conversations, music and everyday sounds that shape their lives.

That perspective developed early. Alexander grew up in Northridge immersed in the rhythms of Los Angeles life. As a child she attended school at the LA Zoo, an experience that sparked an early curiosity about science and the natural world. Her childhood was also shaped by one of the city’s most defining moments. When the Northridge earthquake struck in 1994, her family lost their home, an experience that left a lasting impression and instilled both resilience and a deep appreciation for community.

Her professional path, however, was not immediately obvious. As an undergraduate at UC Santa Barbara, Alexander studied political science and initially imagined a future in environmental law. But just before leaving for law school in Philadelphia, something shifted. Medicine had quietly surrounded her throughout her upbringing—her mother was a nurse married to an ENT physician—and those early influences resurfaced as she began thinking more seriously about the kind of career she wanted to build. “I had a change of heart,” she recalls. “I have multiple family friends who took the direction of law and were unhappy. I decided to defer my enrollment and work for my stepfather in his ENT practice.”

That decision turned out to be life changing. While working in the practice, Alexander began shadowing the audiologist who shared the office. “I was fascinated by this unknown job,” she says. “He was in a helping profession with nearly all upside. I never saw him with an unhappy patient. That was inspirational.” The experience revealed a career that would allow Alexander to not only work in healthcare but also build lasting relationships with patients while helping them navigate one of the most essential parts of everyday life: sound.

Alexander returned to school and earned her Doctorate of Audiology from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, one of the country’s most respected programs for hearing healthcare. After completing her training, she returned to Los Angeles and joined the renowned House Institute—one of the top ear clinics in the world. There she gained extensive clinical experience and eventually helped oversee the organization’s Santa Monica office, building a loyal following and developing a reputation for thoughtful, highly personalized care.

But after years in a large medical system, Alexander began to imagine something different. When organizational changes made it harder to offer the level of accessibility and client connection she believed in, she decided it was time to build her own model of care. “I always felt that the patient came first,” Alexander says. “I’ve seen thousands of people in their own homes and offices to assist with hearing needs. When the structure changed, I knew it wouldn’t suit my empathetic, patient-driven style.”

In 2017, she founded Alexander Audiology, a boutique practice designed around a more personal and relationship-driven approach to auditory health. Today, the practice has offices in Santa Monica and Solvang, serving both the westside and the Santa Ynez Valley. Her connection to Solvang runs deep—her parents have lived in the region for more than two decades, making it a natural place to expand her work. And from her Santa Monica office, Alexander has built a devoted following among westside patients who appreciate the time, care and expertise she brings to each appointment. Professionals, creatives, entrepreneurs and active retirees come not only for evaluations but also for thoughtful guidance on protecting and improving one of the most essential—and often overlooked—parts of the body.

One of the areas where Alexander is especially known is tinnitus treatment. “I am the most experienced provider of tinnitus management in all of California,” she explains. “My doctoral thesis focused on the etiology and management of tinnitus and I served on the board of the American Tinnitus Association.” The common medical condition—characterized as the perception of ringing, buzzing or humming in the ears when no external sound is present—is something millions of people experience, yet many suffer with it quietly without realizing help is available. “Tinnitus is not a random malfunction,” Alexander explains. “It’s the brain’s built-in alarm system.”

The doctor understands the condition not only clinically but personally—she experiences tinnitus herself, which allows her to empathize deeply with patients navigating the frustration and anxiety it can bring. “Tinnitus is usually louder when life slows down,” she says. “When it’s quiet you naturally focus on the sound more. Stress also plays a huge role in how strongly it’s perceived.” Modern treatment approaches focus on reducing the impact of tinnitus through sound therapy, counseling and advanced hearing technology. Many patients experience meaningful relief once they understand what is happening and how to manage it.

Beyond tinnitus care, Alexander Audiology offers comprehensive hearing evaluations, customized hearing aids, auditory processing support and personalized hearing protection—services designed to support hearing health throughout every stage of life. “There’s no reason to put off an evaluation,” Alexander says. “The earlier a baseline is established, the easier it is to manage changes in how we process sound over time.”

Equally important to Alexander is the experience patients have when they walk through the door. Her practice is intentionally unhurried. Appointments allow time for conversation, questions and education—something many patients say feels rare in modern healthcare. And the relationships often last for years. “I wake up every day extremely grateful to go to work and help people,” she says. “A patient can walk through the door with a disability and walk out without one. And over time our patients become friends—we remember everyone.”
