At some point in life, many individuals spend months, even years, planning for a significant event, such as a wedding, the arrival of a child, or the purchase of a home. Yet many people fail to make end-of-life arrangements in advance. Pre-planning ensures that individual values, traditions, and personal wishes are honored in a meaningful way, reflecting the life and legacy of a loved one.

For more than 80 years, Geo. H. Lewis & Sons Funeral Directors has served as Houston's most prestigious provider of funeral, cremation, and memorial services, while honoring the wishes of loved ones. Led by Chief Executive Officer J. Clint Hebert and President J. Douglas Drummond, this work continues today.

“Planning ahead gives families time to reflect on what matters most, document wishes and have meaningful conversations,” explains Hebert. “It also allows families to make decisions deliberately during a time of peace and clarity rather than during a period of grief or uncertainty.”

Drummond adds, “A meaningful celebration of life should feel as distinctive as the person it honors. Incorporating your own style begins with reflecting on the experiences, relationships, and values that have defined your life. Whether that means hosting an elegant gathering in a beautiful setting, showcasing a lifelong art collection, featuring favorite music, displaying family heirlooms, or highlighting philanthropic passions, every detail can help tell a more complete story.

The team at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons takes great pride in caring for each family and personalizing each celebration from planning to the service and beyond. “Ideally, family members walk away saying, 'That was exactly who they were.’ They feel comforted by the stories shared, inspired by the legacy that was created, and connected to one another through the memories,” says Hebert.

Families can plan everything from the setting, music, and family traditions to charitable giving, personal collections, and more. Drummond encourages families to ask questions like “What story do we want this gathering to tell?” “How do we want future generations to remember your life and legacy?” From there, families can consider whether they envision a traditional funeral, a private family gathering, or a personalized celebration of life; where they would like services to be held; cultural or family traditions; and how they would like to highlight their passions, achievements, or military service.

Today’s families do not always follow traditional templates; instead, they lean more towards creating a celebration that feels like planning a party, with the purpose of remembering a loved one in a personal, uplifting way. Celebrations of life can be modest or elaborate. Hebert notes that even if that memorialization does not occur at the funeral home, the staff at Geo. H. Lewis has helped design services that reflect the lifestyles of clients at private clubs, churches, and even personal residences.

“There is no limit to how you tell your story. Your story is unique, yours,” he says. “Take the time to write down some best-loved memories and hard-won lessons. Write letters to loved ones to be shared. That will ensure your values, personality, and traditions are reflected.”

“By documenting your wishes and sharing the traditions, relationships, accomplishments, and causes that have shaped your life, you give your family a roadmap for creating a tribute that feels genuine and deeply personal,” says Drummond.

Hebert believes, “A thoughtfully planned celebration of life has the power to do more than honor someone’s past. It can strengthen family bonds, preserve important traditions, and remind everyone of the lasting impact one person can have on the people around them.”

By documenting your wishes and sharing the traditions, relationships, accomplishments, and causes that have shaped your life, you give your family a roadmap for creating a tribute that feels genuine and deeply personal.
