We all tried to make the best of it, but let’s be honest, last ski season was widely accepted as a giant stinker for snowsports enthusiasts in the state of Colorado. Low snowfall and warm temps had many of us in tears as we hopelessly hit “refresh” on our OpenSnow app. Whether it is fact or fiction, the Super El Niño, which is currently developing over the Pacific Ocean, has given many of us a healthy amount of hopeium going into winter.
For Denver skiers, a mountain weekend begins long before the first lift: choosing where to stay, getting everyone outfitted, and leaving room for dinner after the boots come off. This winter, Colorado’s resorts offer fresh reasons to linger, from more personalized lessons to a new hotel’s first ski season. Here’s where to shape your next escape.
ELDORA MOUNTAIN RESORT
Eldora offers the closest resort skiing and riding access to Denver and surrounding suburbs. While many upgrades and improvements have been made in recent years, the gritty soul of Eldora is certainly alive and well. Timber’s Lodge Taproom, which is one of the few classic on-mountain ski bars left in the state, still boasts a real wood-burning fireplace. When you are there, it feels like “the good ole’ days” again.
New for 2026:
Eldora’s Learn in 3 program gives beginners a reason to keep going after their first day. Complete three lessons and earn a free Eldora season pass. The progression matters: a first lesson offers a start, while coming back gives new skiers and snowboarders time to practice, ask better questions, and get comfortable with the equipment. For the friend who has spent years saying they will try skiing someday, a short series can make that first commitment feel manageable. Screaming deals aren’t typically mentioned in the same breath as ski resorts, but this is definitely an incredible value for those looking to take the plunge.
WINTER PARK
An earlier alarm will pay off at Winter Park this season. New weekend hours run from 8 am to 4 pm, beginning in mid-December or when the Gondola opens for the season, whichever comes first. The additional hour is available to everyone, with no paid earlier access on Saturdays and Sundays.
For a weekend visitor, that changes the shape of the day. An early start can make space for a longer lunch, a few more runs together, or time to try something away from the lifts. Families do not have to fill every extra minute with skiing to appreciate a little more flexibility.
Tubing and snowshoeing are established options for rounding out a Winter Park visit, particularly with a group whose enthusiasm for skiing varies. Check the current activity schedule as plans come together, then allow enough room to enjoy the outing rather than hurry through it. A mountain weekend feels different when everyone gets to choose something. With another hour available on snow, there is a little less reason to make the afternoon a race against the last lift.
Apres at the Lodge at Sunspot - Bucket list check:
- There’s no wrong way to après, but this one might just top them all. Grab the kids, family, or crew and settle in with live music, food and drink specials, and sweeping mountain views. Whether you're sipping a cocktail at golden hour or dancing with friends, Mountaintop Après is the perfect way to wind down—or turn it up. Free gondola rides run from 4 pm to 7 pm for those who simply want to apres without the ski.
ARAPAHOE BASIN
Arapahoe Basin turns 80 this season, and the anniversary weekend, December 4-6, 2026, offers an early invitation to celebrate. The occasion suits a ski area whose appeal has long centered on the mountain and the people who keep coming back to it. Put the dates on the calendar, then let conditions determine the skiing.
Preparations for winter include four new tower snowmaking guns. They are a practical addition to the work of getting the season underway, while the anniversary supplies a reason to gather. Early December is still early December, so save any ambitious terrain plans for the daily mountain report.
While you are here:
- Build in a pause at Black Mountain Lodge or 6th Alley Bar & Grill. An unhurried meal belongs in an A-Basin day as much as the next run, particularly when friends have stories to compare. Eight decades give the celebration its milestone; a familiar table and a reason to stay a little longer make it personal.
VAIL / BEAVER CREEK
Vail Mountain and Beaver Creek are set to debut Epic Ascent this winter, a new private lesson experience that pairs expert instruction with personalized concierge service to help guests make the most of their time on the mountain.
Every Epic Ascent booking includes dedicated trip-planning support, from dining reservations and rental equipment to transportation coordination and customized on-mountain itineraries, along with flexible lesson start locations and skip-the-lift-line access.
While you are here:
- In Vail Village, the Shakedown Bar is the absolute perfect way to close out a day on the hill. In our opinion, it is the best live music joint for any ski town in the country.
- Over in Beaver Creek, the Vilar Performing Arts Center offers a seated performance to anchor an evening out. Check the calendar before settling on travel dates; the right show can be the reason to choose one weekend over another.
COPPER MOUNTAIN
For families with teenagers, Copper’s pass news deserves a closer look. The 2026–27 Copper Season Pass offer includes one free pass for a child 17 or younger with a qualifying adult pass purchase. Extending the offer through the teenage years makes it relevant to households that have outgrown the usual little-kid promotions but still face the cost of getting everyone onto the mountain.
There is an appealing freedom in being able to return. A day can be devoted to practicing, skiing together, or simply finding out how much energy everyone has. Families considering the offer should review the current purchase terms and decide how often Copper fits their winter plans.
After skiing, the resort’s villages give the group a place to gather for a meal before heading home or settling in for another day. For a weekend stay, leave part of the afternoon open. When the next morning is already reserved for skiing, there is less pressure to squeeze everything into the first one.
Opening & Early Season
- Opening Day: Scheduled for November 6, 2026 (conditions permitting), sharing an opening day with nearby Breckenridge.
- Snowmaking Upgrades: Expanded multi-year snowmaking featuring new fan guns and semi-automatic hydrants to improve early-season coverage.
BRECKENRIDGE
This winter, Breck invites guests to join The Kingdom of Breck, a fresh identity for the resort inspired by one of the town's most enduring stories. In 1936, after Breckenridge was mistakenly left off a U.S. map, locals embraced their fiercely independent spirit and declared themselves citizens of the "Kingdom of Breckenridge." Nearly 90 years later, that same rebellious spirit and playful identity still defines this place.
Can’t miss signature experiences in Breck:
- Highest lift-served terrain in North America, reaching nearly 13,000 feet via the Imperial Express SuperChair.
- T-Bar’s famed après scene featuring live DJs every Friday and Saturday and the new ski-in, ski-out series, Après at the Overlook.
- Ullr Fest, Breckenridge's iconic celebration of the Norse god of snow.
KEYSTONE RESORT
This winter season, Kindred Resort ushers in a new era of hospitality at Keystone, introducing a luxury alpine retreat rooted in its distinctive "Campfire Luxury" atmosphere. Located at the base of River Run Village just steps from the River Run Gondola, Kindred combines sophisticated accommodations with unparalleled convenience, serving as home to the Epic Mountain rental shop and award-winning Ski & Ride School. Together with Keystone’s new brand campaign, Lifetime of Firsts, Kindred creates the perfect setting for families to create new mountain memories and inspire them to return year after year.
Why we love it:
- Closest night skiing proximity to the front range.
- Free parking
- Kids 12 and younger can ski and ride for free every day, all season long with two or more nights of lodging booked through Keystone Resort.
CROSS COUNTRY GETAWAYS
Some days, a few miles through the trees and a warm place to land sound pretty good. Colorado’s established Nordic spots offer plenty of ways to build a winter weekend around a pair of skinny skis.
For a cross-country getaway with some creature comforts, start with Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Tabernash. Nearly 120 kilometers of Nordic trails wind through Ranch Creek Valley, with classic and skate skiing, rentals and lessons. Day visitors can buy a trail pass; an overnight stay adds lodge rooms or cabins, with the Ranch Creek Spa handy for tired legs.
The YMCA’s Snow Mountain Ranch near Granby makes a strong case for a cabin weekend. Trails meander through pine forest and open meadows, and overnight guests receive complimentary trail passes. Rentals and classic or skate lessons are available separately. A cabin with a kitchen gives families room to spread out after skiing.
For a low-key day with big scenery, Grand Lake offers 35 kilometers of groomed classic and skate trails, views toward Rocky Mountain National Park, and a scenic river route. Rentals and lessons make it approachable for newcomers. Stay in town and make a weekend of it.
Near Leadville, Tennessee Pass pairs more than 27 kilometers of groomed Nordic trails with a genuinely unplugged overnight. Ski or snowshoe the 1.3-mile groomed approach to the sleep yurts, where woodstoves, solar lights and no Wi-Fi set the tone. Expect outhouses and patchy cell service. Reserve the yurt and a Cookhouse meal separately.
Plan ahead: These are maintained Nordic networks; venturing into ungroomed backcountry requires separate route and safety planning. Early-season coverage varies, so check current grooming reports and operating dates before heading up. November skiing is never guaranteed. Reserve lodging, lessons, and Cookhouse meals ahead.
