Pour and Explore

Sip, savor, and explore your way through Madison County.

In Madison County, the Blue Ridge Mountains are the beautifully pervasive backdrop. They rise beyond vineyards, frame tasting-room patios, and beckon from winding country roads, making the scenery as much a part of a wine-country trip as what’s poured into the glass.

You can begin a wine getaway in Madison in any part of the county, but DuCard Vineyards is an amazing destination to start. Nestled in the foothills near Shenandoah National Park, the boutique mountainside winery offers tableside flights led by wine ambassadors who introduce guests to wines made on-site by winemaker Julien Durantie from grapes grown just outside the winery.

Recent accolades include gold medals in the 2026 Virginia Governor’s Cup and San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, while VinePair recognized DuCard’s 2024 Black Bear among its 30 Best Red Blends and its 2023 Tana among its 30 Best Chardonnays for 2026. Sustainability also shapes the experience, from solar panels powering the tasting room and winery to EV charging and the annual Sipping for Saplings event.

There are plenty of reasons to stay awhile. Live music takes place every weekend, while events throughout the year include chocolate and wine tastings, Armchair Expeditions exploring grape varieties and wines from around the world, a charitable Farm to Table Harvest Dinner, Seafood Festival, and LobsterPalooza.

The surrounding landscape makes it easy to add some adventure beforehand with wine as a reward. Nearby Old Rag is known for its challenging hike, rock scramble, and sweeping summit scenery, while White Oak Canyon offers waterfalls and wooded trails. Throughout Madison County, opportunities for hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and other outdoor pursuits make a tasting trip easy to expand into a full day outdoors.

Back on the tasting trail, Blue Quartz Winery and Shotwell Run Brewing Company offer something for nearly every preference. Their shared tasting and tap room sits on a knoll along scenic Route 231, overlooking the vineyard and Old Rag Mountain. Owners Hal White and Chris Wallin purchased the property in 2009, combining a passion for beer and farm life with appreciation for wine. Today, they run the family venture with their son, Harold.

Estate-grown wines, hard cider, and craft beer share the spotlight, while an on-site kitchen serves food and all-day brunch on Sundays. Expansive outdoor space, along with a welcoming situation for children and dogs, keeps the experience decidedly relaxed.

Madison’s tasting options continue at Early Mountain Vineyards, where Virginia wine is paired with a culinary program highlighting seasonal ingredients with another gorgeous view from any spot inside or outside. Bald Top Brewing Co. adds farm-brewed beer, casual food, live music, and mountain scenery to the mix, while longtime Virginia wine destination Prince Michel Vineyard & Winery offers another stop for those tasting their way through the county.

At Revalation Vineyards, Blue Ridge views accompany estate-grown wines at two tasting spaces, including a cabin used for private rentals and special events. Its calendar brings art and other experiences into the vineyard, while verjus, the tart, nonalcoholic juice of unripe wine grapes, provides an intriguing taste of what grapes can become beyond wine.

When it’s time to eat away from the vineyards, Madison offers everything from café stops at Cake Krums and Mugs & Muffins to casual favorites including Pig ’N Steak, Los Brothers, The Mountaineer Cafe, Gino’s, Jenny Lynd’s, Piedmont Deli, and The Freeze. Yoder’s Country Market combines food and shopping with a petting zoo, while The Bavarian Chef has become a destination of its own for German cuisine.

Shopping offers another reason to wander. Madison is home to locally rooted shops, artisan finds, antiques, and longstanding businesses, including Clore Furniture, whose Virginia furniture-making tradition dates to 1830.

For travelers ready to turn a tasting day away from a local staycation into a getaway, The Estate at Meander makes for a beautiful home base. Spread across 77 acres in the Blue Ridge foothills, the property traces its history to a 1726 land grant to Colonel Joshua Fry. Today, guests can stay in restored Manor House suites, historic cottages, and private garden cottages surrounded by pastoral landscapes.

Food is part of the experience at the Estate, too. Harvest & Hearth features seasonal, farm-to-fork cuisine inspired by Virginia’s Piedmont region, while Patio & Porch pairs relaxed outdoor dining with panoramic mountain views. A one-mile walking trail follows the Robinson River through meadows, woods, and historic grounds.

There is even a connection back to where the journey began and an intertwining of the Estate with a local winery. DuCard created a special wine for Meander honoring Reverend Henry Fry, son of Colonel Joshua Fry and builder of the Manor House, bringing Madison’s wine, history, and hospitality together in a single bottle.

Meander is also entering a new era. Elim Spa Village is scheduled to begin opening in fall 2026, bringing outdoor thermal pools, sauna, and steam experiences, gardens, wellness programming, and a Blue Ridge Reflection pool to the historic estate.

Madison County can certainly be explored in a day, but there is little reason to hurry. Go for the wine, then stay for the mountains, food, trails, history, and the pleasure of discovering what waits around the next bend in the road.
