For more than a decade, Power 4 Pink has been making a powerful difference in the lives of women fighting breast cancer. Founded in 2009 by Marcy L. Calvert, a Vermilion local, veteran, and registered nurse with more than 40 years of healthcare experience, the organization was born from a personal journey that transformed into a community mission.
Marcy’s own battle with breast cancer inspired her to create something that would ensure no one had to face the disease alone or without support. Her vision was simple yet profound: form a bridge between individuals diagnosed with breast cancer and the healthcare resources they needed to live a healthy, fulfilling life. Today, Power 4 Pink remains dedicated to that mission through direct assistance, education, outreach, and fundraising.
A Mission Rooted in Personal Experience
A career nurse and active community member of Vermilion, Marcy used her extensive medical background and deep empathy to shape Power 4 Pink into more than a typical charity. She understood the emotional, physical, and financial toll a breast cancer diagnosis can take. With her decades of nursing experience, she recognized that clinical care is only one part of the journey as support, education, emotional encouragement, and financial navigation are equally vital.
From the start, the organization has worked to ensure local residents receive necessary testing, care, resources, and connections to healthcare professionals to pursue early detection, proper treatment, and survivorship support.
What Power 4 Pink Does
Power 4 Pink operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, functioning without a permanent office but with a strong volunteer board and community network to carry out its goals. Funds raised through events, donations, and community partnerships are allocated to assist those actively undergoing breast cancer treatment who may lack sufficient insurance or financial resources.
The organization provides:
- Financial assistance to help cover treatment costs, co-pays, prescriptions, prosthetics, compression garments, transportation expenses, and other cancer-related needs.
- Survivor support bags full of comfort and educational materials to uplift individuals newly diagnosed or entering treatment.
- Outreach, education, and advocacy to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and ongoing care.
Community Impact and Outreach
Since 2013, Power 4 Pink has directly helped 484 patients fight breast cancer, a testament to its sustained impact in the community. Over the years, the organization has raised a total of $242,208.14 to fund these efforts and expand its outreach. These numbers reflect more than statistics; they represent individual stories of relief, resilience, and hope.
Because funds are limited and carefully reviewed by the Board of Directors, assistance is prioritized for residents who are actively in treatment and whose household income falls below defined levels. This thoughtful approach ensures that help reaches those who need it most.
Event Spotlight:
One key annual fundraiser for Power 4 Pink is the “Night at the Races” event, scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. in Oberlin. The event features dinner, racing entertainment, and a cash raffle. Tickets are limited, and proceeds go directly toward financial assistance and survivor resources, strengthening the organization’s ability to lift up those in need.
Continuing the Legacy
Power 4 Pink’s work is sustained by volunteers, donors, local businesses, and individuals who share its vision of compassionate care. As Marcy often reminds supporters, “Your fight is our fight.” This principle rooted in personal story, professional expertise, and community spirit continues to fuel the organization’s efforts to transform the breast cancer journey locally.
