Practicing Gratitude

Six simple ways to savor the season and share appreciation

November in Arizona brings a welcome change of pace. The intensity of summer has faded, mornings begin with cooler air, evenings invite us outdoors, and the desert seems to settle into one of its most beautiful seasons. With the holidays just ahead, there is something about this time of year that naturally encourages us to slow down, look around and appreciate what is already here.

Gratitude, after all, is more than a seasonal sentiment. It is a perspective, one that can shift our attention from what we are constantly reaching for to the abundance that already surrounds us. The people we love, the comfort of home, a table shared with friends, a beautiful desert sunset or an evening spent outside can all become reminders that some of life’s greatest luxuries are often its simplest.

There is also something powerful about expressing that gratitude. A thoughtful note, an unexpected gesture, a meal shared together or simply telling someone how much they are appreciated can turn an ordinary moment into a meaningful one. Gratitude has a way of extending beyond ourselves, strengthening relationships and creating deeper connections with the people around us.

Here in Gilbert, those connections are part of what makes our community so special. They can be found in the local businesses built with passion, the organizations giving back, the neighbors supporting one another and the families creating traditions of their own.

Thankfulness doesn’t require a grand gesture or even a special occasion. Often, it is found in noticing the details we might otherwise move too quickly past.

As November unfolds, perhaps the invitation is simply to be more present. To linger a little longer around the table. To enjoy the beautiful weather we waited all summer for. To reach out to someone we appreciate. To recognize the good that exists within the everyday.

Because sometimes the richest life isn’t found in having more, but in recognizing just how much we already have.

Volunteering is a powerful way to express gratitude

as it turns appreciation into action. By giving time,

skills, or support to others, we acknowledge our own

blessings, foster connection, and make a positive

impact, showing thankfulness through meaningful

contribution and generosity. There are a myriad of

wonderful causes to dedicate your time to; another

way to deepen your ties in your community

KEEP A GRATITUDE JOURNAL:

Keeping a gratitude journal helps shift focus from

what’s lacking to what’s abundant in life. By regularly

recording moments of appreciation, it boosts mood,

reduces stress, and cultivates mindfulness, making it

easier to notice everyday joys and strengthen overall

happiness and well-being. Some days may be easier

than others but some days it’s okay to acknowledge

your appreciation for a hot cup of coffee.

WRITE A POSITIVE REVIEW FOR A LOCAL BUSINESS:

Have you been meaning to write a kind review about

that new place you loved? If it’s been on your to-do

list, make it a priority. Writing a positive review for a

local business is a simple way to practice gratitude.

It acknowledges the hard work behind the service,

supports the community, and spreads positivity, helping both the business thrive and you feel more connected to the place we call home.

TAKE A GRATITUDE WALK:

A gratitude walk combines movement with mindfulness,

making it a powerful practice. By noticing

nature, reflecting on blessings, and appreciating

the present moment, it shifts focus away from

stress. And we all know taking a walk is a great way to

get our bodies and minds moving. This simple habit

boosts mood, deepens gratitude, and strengthens

both mental and physical well-being.

SAY ‘THANK YOU’ MORE OFTEN:

Needless to say, saying “thank you” more often is

a simple yet powerful way to practice gratitude. It

acknowledges kindness, strengthens relationships,

and fosters positivity. Regularly expressing appreciation

not only uplifts others but also deepens your

own sense of thankfulness. You just might inspire

someone else’s gratitude journey!

HAVE A GRATITUDE “BUDDY”:

Pair up with a friend this month! Having a gratitude

buddy is a great way to create connection while reinforcing

thankfulness. By sharing what you appreciate

with a friend or partner, you gain fresh perspective,

deepen relationships, and stay accountable making
