Local photographer Jamie Joos, of Jamie Joos Photography has a passion for photographing families. “Each experience is so different,” Jamie shares, which allows her to showcase what she does best, capturing the essence of the family dynamic. She’s deeply passionate about guiding families through the process of a productive and enjoyable photo shoot where everyone feels at ease, and the final product is exactly as the family envisioned. As you get ready for your summer shoot or fall session, Jamie shares helpful tips and tricks she has stashed in her back pocket that will leave you feeling prepared and ready to document those important milestones or simply capture the unique stage of life you’re in.
LET'S GET THE QUESTION YOU PROBABLY GET ASKED THE MOST OUT OF THE WAY: WHAT SHOULD FAMILIES WEAR TO THEIR PHOTO SESSION?
Wear what feels most comfortable but ideally, there should be some color coordination. “I typically set up a Pinterest board to share with my clients so that they can add their ideas and inspiration.”
WHAT TECHNIQUES DO YOU USE TO ENGAGE AND CAPTURE THE ATTENTION OF CHILDREN AND PETS DURING FAMILY PHOTOS?
When photographing children, Jamie likes to get to know what their interests are and then uses those to connect. She’ll bring stuffed animals and candy for a distraction and to make it a fun experience. Jamie explains, “Being flexible and calm is most important to capture candid, authentic photos”. During one family session, she even had a dance party with a little girl that helped her finish the photo session gracefully.
ARE THERE SPECIFIC LOCATIONS OR ENVIRONMENTS THAT WORK WELL FOR FAMILY SESSIONS?
Jamie's studio is contained, so she can easily modify her lighting. Pets are also welcome in the studio. “As for outdoor photos, my favorites are the Waconia boat launch and my family farm in Cologne.”
HOW DO YOU ENSURE THE PHOTOS REFLECT THE UNIQUE DYNAMICS AND PERSONALITIES OF EACH FAMILY?
“Having a clear picture of what the expectations are is essential”. If someone loves showing off photo albums in their home, Jamie knows it will be a storytelling session reflecting the time in her clients’ lives, that they can then fill an album with. While she does offer a digital option, Jamie is a print-focused photographer.
WHAT KIND OF PREPARATION DO YOU GO THROUGH WITH FAMILIES BEFORE A PHOTO SHOOT?
Jamie sends a questionnaire to the family covering their expectations. They can review outfit choices, special requests, and price lists.
