When Mike Kaufman took over Inkwell in Westfield from its retiring founders, it wasn’t just about ink on paper. It was about building relationships, solving problems and helping clients see printing as an investment in their vision.
“We’re not the kind of company that just prints and drops,” Kaufman explains. “We work with clients—whether small businesses or major brands—to understand their goals. It’s a three-legged stool: profitability, ethics and community.”
That philosophy shows up in how Inkwell operates. Beyond serving as a trusted partner for businesses, the company lives its values in the communities it touches. Kaufman and his team support organizations like Bridges Outreach in Summit, helping the homeless find opportunities, and Vision and Pathways in Bridgewater, which provides services to at-risk youth. Their giving stretches to many other charities and organizations—from local nonprofits all the way to the zoo in Utica and back. Often, the support is quiet and behind the scenes—done not for recognition, but because “it’s the right thing to do.”
Kaufman is quick to note that he doesn’t do this alone. Behind the scenes, he leans heavily on Melissa Parisi, who is a driving force in Inkwell’s success and community impact.
Balancing deadlines, quality and profitability with social impact is a challenge Kaufman embraces. By staying active in local chambers of commerce and community causes, he believes the cycle comes full circle: strong businesses strengthen communities, which in turn foster thriving businesses.
Looking forward, Inkwell plans to expand its community footprint with a new Westfield location. From partnering with schools to engaging more deeply with the chamber, Kaufman sees the future as a blend of technology, personal service and human connection.
“Printing is what we do,” Kaufman reflects. “But people, relationships and community—that’s who we are.”
