Alison Turner, owner of Bob Turner Construction, a local business specializing in home renovation and remodeling, shares tips on how to survive the process of remodeling your kitchen. Since the kitchen is the "heart" of the home, steps can be taken to make the process easier while you go through the renovation.
- Finalize your design before project begins. It can be very expensive to make changes once the process has begun. You may want to consult with a kitchen designer or space planner to help with the layout, cabinet design etc.
- Select all of your materials in advance! With the supply chain delays – you can help speed up the process by selecting and ordering your materials in advance. This includes:
- Appliances
- Countertops
- Backsplash
- Lighting fixtures
- Color scheme (even paint is hard to come by these days like oil-based paints used for cabinets and trim)
- Pack up all of the contents in cabinetry and pantry. Make sure to set aside items you will need on a regular basis. Plates, silverware, glassware, dry foods.
- Set up a space for your “temporary” kitchen! You will want to have make shift kitchen during your remodel. Find a place for refrigerator, coffee pot, microwave, and pantry items. You may also want to think about where you will wash your dishes. Once demo is done – you will also be without a dishwasher.
- Do you have pets? Think about how you will keep them safe and out of the way of construction.
- Check with your contractor about whether they will be using oil based paints during the process. If so – you may want to treat yourself to a night or two away during that time to get away from the fumes.
- Have plenty of take-out menus on hand!
While getting a new kitchen is exciting, Alison hopes these tips will make the whole experience less stressful for you and your family. For more expert advice and to learn more about remodeling your home, call Alison Turner with Bob Turner Construction at 949.922.0720
