Rec Room Redux

An Unfinished Basement Designed For 21st Century Entertaining, Leisure and Recreation

Do the words ‘Rec Room’ conjure images of a 1970’s unfinished basement with concrete floors, grandma’s old floral couch, exposed framing and insulation? Not so with this Highlands Ranch basement finish by FBC Remodel. The space has the sophistication of a main-level living space, with the comfort and hygge of a mountain lodge. Designed for 21st Century living, it includes a wine cellar tasting room, well-appointed kitchenette, double sided bar, lounge area and space for games.

The exposed brick columns add warmth to the otherwise modern and sleek styling, as do the wooden stools, floating shelves, and dark stained French doors. The wine room includes innovative houndstooth-like slanted bottle storage on the wall, and the coppery-brown leather bar chairs call you to sit and sip. The design allows for versatile use of the space, recreation, leisure and entertaining, everything from movie nights to Super Bowl parties to vintage wine tastings work in this space.

“Our basement was unfinished and used primarily for storage. We wanted a space where we could entertain guests. We also incorporated a wine room that is a favorite place to enjoy a glass of wine with friends,” the homeowners say. “Our basement fit so perfectly with what we wanted the space to be. It is the most popular space in the house.”

FBC’s philosophy is “Build Joy’’, which drives all the work they do, be it a basement like this one, their business model or employee culture. Their customers are often stunned to find they enjoy the design-build process as much as the finished space. In fact, this customer had such a great experience their adult daughter went into design and now works for FBC. The joy they built grew out of the re-designed space and back into their own business.
