Recharging our Charities

Four Ways to Contribute to Our Community's Well-Being

We live in a generous community that has a spirit of philanthropy at its core. Over the last three months, our residents and non-profits have been stepping forward more than ever to care for our local families who have been impacted the most by the effects of the coronavirus. These charities are looking to restock their shelves and replenish their volunteers and funds so they can continue to serve our communities. Here are four ways you can help.

+ Volunteers and Food

About 20 percent of Lakota students, nearly 3,500, receive free or reduced school lunch. In partnership with Lakota Child Nutrition, the Faith Alliance offers fun activities and additional food assistance for our neediest local kids through the Summer Lunch Program. They also provide Summer Literacy and ESL Classes for young, struggling readers from low-income homes. Many volunteers are needed for these programs, along with donations of food, activities and essentials. Visit their website to see how you can help.

+ Financial Contributions

The Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty established the Community Health Fund with the purpose of efficiently addressing local needs during the COVID-19 health crisis. This fund is providing grants to support the purchase of medical supplies for our local hospitals, food for our local pantries, much-needed supplies for our first responders and much more. Every dollar counts and will be distributed to non-profit organizations serving the residents of West Chester and Liberty.

+ Food and Supplies

Reach Out Lakota’s mission is to give a helping hand up to those living in West Chester/Liberty Township. They provide food, clothing and school items for our local neighbors who are most in need. Items they’re running low on include cereal, oatmeal, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meat and tuna, pasta, peanut butter, maseca, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bar soap, deodorant and all-purpose cleaners. They’re also starting the annual Back to School program this month, collecting school supplies for needy students.

+ Volunteers and Donations

Supports to Encourage Low-income Families (SELF) helps hard-working individuals in Butler County find a path to live their dreams and better support their families. SELF needs groups of six or more volunteers this summer and fall to make repairs on 86 homes in Butler County that have been pre-qualified. Volunteer groups can work one or more days, performing home repairs and safety and mobility enhancements for senior citizens, veterans and those who are physically unable to perform the repairs. Financial support is also needed to hire contractors for emergency repairs.
