As the leaves begin to turn and the air gets crisper, many of us find ourselves dreaming of cozy spaces and festive gatherings. This season, we turn our spotlight on a remarkable renovation that not only enhances functionality but also showcases the charm of a beloved home. J2 Design Studio, led by owner Denise Jones, took on the challenge of transforming a classic saltbox house in Bernardsville, for homeowners Claudia and Steve Dey.
Master Planning for Space, Function and Style
The homeowner longed for her home to be a more welcoming and relaxing retreat, now that their adult children were on their own. J2 Design Studio was charged with the task of finding space in a historic saltbox house where, inherently, there was little to be found. With the collaborative expertise employed by Denise, her husband, architect Patrick M. Jones, AIA, and the building contractor, opportunities were found to maximize the building lot coverage and creatively find the desired solution. The existing two car garage was rebuilt as a two story structure, maximizing their lot and afforded space for a new master bedroom and bath suite on the new second floor, as well as the new mudroom, laundry and butler’s pantry below. A rear addition provided a warm and inviting breakfast area which expanded the kitchen, looking out over their beautiful and personally curated gardens. “We wanted our home to reflect our personalities and the quality of life we cherish,” Steve shared. After completing their project, gatherings are more frequent and their family can’t imagine calling anyplace else home.
Jones emphasized the importance of collaboration in the master planning and design process. “Not a day goes by without us appreciating and enjoying how you blended our existing house with the new,” Claudia noted, highlighting the seamless integration of the additions with the original structure.
From Dream to Concept, Concept to Reality
The scope of the project revolved around correcting circulation issues and functional challenges. Studying, stretching and pulling ideas that would conform to the current lot but would eloquently resolve all issues is what J2 Design Studio inherently does. We rise to the challenge and find solutions even when all hope is nearly lost. The J2 team focused on both architectural integration and interior design, ensuring that the home felt cohesive and reflective of the Deys’ style.
“The best solutions are born out of listening closely and collaborating openly with the homeowner and a talented team of professionals,” Jones explained. In this instance, custom solutions solved many challenges whether it be functional improvements or the seamless transition from existing to new construction. The homeowner’s vision, team expertise and our pre-construction process planning is what separates us apart from decorative designers.
Cohesive and Timeless
Moving through common, quiet, utility and outdoor spaces effortlessly flows, one space to the next. For example, the coffered ceiling in the breakfast area cleverly conceals height transitions, more uniform flooring, unifies and expands space, “We strive to carve out charm and functionality in every detail,” Jones said.
The result is a home that beautifully marries tradition with modern living, allowing the family to showcase their colorful art collections and enjoy views of their lush gardens.
A Testament to Teamwork
A homeowner’s instinct is to first call a contractor to solve their home woes. Oftentimes it becomes clear additional expertise and guidance is needed. In this instance, the relationship between the contractor and J2 Design Studio proved to be the key to success. The vision became clear and a cohesive team was realized. “It’s crucial to find the right team that understands the clients’ vision and can execute it with precision.”
A Home for All Seasons
As the Deys prepare to welcome friends and family into their newly transformed space this holiday season, they reflect on the journey. “We couldn’t be happier, especially when we share the space with our friends and relatives,” Claudia expressed.
Their home is not just a collection of spaces; rather it’s a canvas that tells their family story—a beautiful blend of function, comfort, and style. This holiday season, as they gather around their new kitchen, it’s clear that the Deys and J2 Design Studio have created a retreat that embodies their easy going lifestyle and new found love for entertaining.
The Dey family's newly designed saltbox house stands as a testament to the magic of thoughtful design and the art of re-imagination. As Denise Jones put it, “It’s all about creating a space where people feel at home, and we achieved that beautifully.”
This holiday, let us celebrate the joy of home—whether through renovation, gathering with loved ones, or simply appreciating the spaces that bring us together.
