Located on the border of Deephaven and Wayzata on Minnetonka Boulevard, Lakeside Nails & Spa has been an anchor for the community for the past six years. Owner Phong Tran and his family moved to Minnesota from Vietnam in 1995 where his parents opened salons in various locations throughout the Twin Cities. Years later, inspired by his father's hard work and determination, Phong and his wife Thanh decided it was time to open their own nail salon. In August of 2016 they signed the lease for their spot in Deephaven, bringing on friends and family to work at the salon. It was then that Lakeside Nails was born. “We actually remodeled from scratch,” Phong tells me. He was able to remodel the empty space and turn it into a working salon within six months.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Nail Salon
The salon serves clientele from all over the Minnetonka area and beyond. The salon is a favorite among customers and was a Sun Media Reader’s Choice Award Winner this year. “We have really tried to make Lakeside Nails and Spa an atmosphere that is as welcoming and community-oriented as possible,” shares Phong. “I recognize and remember everyone’s name as they walk through the door.”
The salon has garnered rave reviews online and a strong customer base. Everything from “friendly, kind, and talented nail techs” to “I am completely satisfied and won’t be going anywhere else!” has been said about the loved spa. Phong has worked hard to make this an enjoyable, fun, and safe environment for both his staff and clientele alike. To go above and beyond, the salon carries Zoya nail polishes, a line of chemical-free polishes so women who are pregnant or nursing can have their nails done safely. Each chair also has a ventilation system to keep Lakeside free of chemical smells.
“We are like a family and we take good care of each other with consistent service. This value is good for business,” Phong says. “Our customers keep coming back because our product lasts and we deliver exceptional work.”
Delivering Self-Care and Confidence
Women are the primary consumers of nail salon services, and historically have found these services to be both empowering and relaxing. In fact, according to a 2022 article by Trafft, a salon appointment software service, women represent up to 97% of all clients in nail salons across the United States.
Even with the COVID-19 pandemic shuttering nail salons and other beauty salons across the country, the demand is not going away for this affordable luxury. The entire industry is forecasted to have continuous growth over the next five years or so, according to 2021 market research data. What keeps theses locally-owned nail salons thriving is customer service and a positive and safe environment, which Lakeside Nails and Spa prides itself on. “[This place] is a break from the hustle and bustle of work,” says Phong. “The location and parking is convenient for customers. Additionally, we're accessible to dining options around Minnetonka, Excelsior, and Wayzata. I hope that our guests can come relax and beautify their experience.”
The convenience factor and warm environment all work in the favor of Lakeside Nails & Spa sticking around as a staple in the community for years to come. Empowering women and offering a relaxing environment will continue to be a focal point, and treating each and every guest like family is what the business was built on. “Over the last six years we have built this business one client at a time. We have worked hard to gain the trust of our community.”
