Many children learn some of life's most important lessons through their relationships with pets. Compassion, responsibility, patience, and unconditional love often begin with the wag of a tail or the purr of a cat. In Rockwall County, Rockwall PAWS helps ensure that more families, and more children, have the opportunity to experience those special bonds by giving vulnerable animals a second chance at life.
Founded with a mission to reduce the number of homeless and unadoptable animals, Rockwall PAWS provides critical medical treatment to pets at the Rockwall Adoption Center before they are adopted into loving homes. By addressing serious medical conditions that might otherwise prevent adoption, the organization transforms animals once considered difficult to place into healthy, adoptable companions.
One of Rockwall PAWS's most impactful programs focuses on heartworm-positive dogs. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition that affects thousands of dogs across Texas. Treatment can cost adopters thousands of dollars, creating a significant barrier to adoption. Rockwall PAWS became the first non-rescue organization in North Texas to fund heartworm treatment and major medical care for adoptable shelter pets, helping remove that obstacle and giving deserving dogs the opportunity to find permanent homes. Since 2010, Rockwall Paws has treated over 400 dogs for heartworm.
The organization works closely with veterinary partners, including Legacy Humane Veterinary Clinic and Pet Doctor, to provide lifesaving care. Funding is used for heartworm testing, chest X-rays when medically necessary, specialized surgical procedures, medications, and the costly Immiticide injections required for heartworm treatment. Because every animal's medical condition is unique, treatment plans are individualized based on factors such as age, overall health, and severity of disease.
Beyond heartworm treatment, Rockwall PAWS also assists with major medical cases involving injured or ill animals at the Rockwall Adoption Center. Whether a dog requires surgery after an injury or a cat needs specialized medical care before becoming adoptable, the organization steps in to provide resources that many municipal shelters cannot fund alone. These efforts not only save lives but also improve quality of life for the animals and increase their chances of finding loving families.
The impact extends beyond the animals themselves. Families who adopt through the Rockwall Adoption Center often gain a healthy, ready-to-love companion without facing overwhelming medical expenses. Children, in particular, benefit from growing up alongside pets that teach empathy, kindness, and responsibility. Every successful adoption creates a ripple effect of positive change throughout the community.
Rockwall PAWS relies on community support to continue its mission. Donations directly fund medical treatment for shelter animals in need, while volunteers help raise awareness and support fundraising efforts throughout the year. Every contribution, large or small, helps provide lifesaving care and creates more opportunities for animals to find permanent homes.
