From rescuing baby squirrels as the self-proclaimed “squirrel-whisperer” to growing the 5th largest roofing company in the state of Texas, Roy Campbell is a busy man. Not too busy to give back to the community, however. When Roy read Candace Segall’s heartfelt letter requesting a new roof for her mother, Donna Shipley Hughes, “I knew I had to help,” says Roy.

Roy and his colleagues launched a contest to give away a free roof. When asked why he’d commit to such a costly undertaking, he says, “We’ve been blessed with over 44,000 customers. I just feel like I needed to do something to give back because we’ve been given so much.”

Telge Roofing put out an open call to applicants to submit a personal letter with photos if they were in need of a new roof. Out of more than 300 submissions, Roy and his team selected Donna Shipley Hughes. Donna’s story was compelling. A disabled single mother in her mid-60s on a fixed income, the letter spoke of Donna’s selflessness and desire to always help others in need instead of helping herself.

“Honestly, it wasn’t an easy decision,” says Roy. “There are so many people in need. I did award gift cards to some of the other applicants because I felt I needed to do something.”

Giving away a free residential roof isn’t the only thing that Roy has done for the community. Telge Roofing also agreed to a new roof on VFW Post 8905, a building from the 1940s that’s desperately in need of a new roof. He’s kept dozens of people employed, many for decades, and all signs point to Telge Roofing’s continued expansion.

Telge Roofing has grown beyond just serving the Cypress area. They offer commercial and residential roofing services in areas ranging from Sugarland to Austin and beyond. They boast an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and have achieved Presidential status from GAF, a designation that’s considered the gold standard in the roofing industry.

Beyond Roy’s goal of trying to “roof the world”, he still has plans to give back to the community. When asked about the roof giveaway, Roy remarked, “We’ll continue to do it every year that we’re still able to.”
