While our world was vastly different two centuries ago, appreciation for quality remains the same and continues to inspire the Cunard experience. The British-based luxury cruise line has welcomed discerning travelers since the 1840s — from royalty to Hollywood starlets to military heroes — and has quite literally sailed the seven seas of the globe.
If you’re pondering your next trip, you may be wondering what makes Cunard so distinctive – is it really worth so many people coming back year after year? Put simply, the level of luxury offered by Cunard is different from most. Onboard the company’s fleet — including the popular Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria — guests experience a feeling of well-being that prevails long after they’ve resumed daily life. All five senses are engaged on a Cunard cruise; guests are treated to decadent cuisine, premium entertainment, restorative activities and even artful decor. In fact, the fleet’s newest ship, the Queen Anne, recently impressed its previewers with a collection of more than 4,000 pieces of art, including previously unpublished works from Pei Chi Lee, John Biggs, Tommy Camerno and other noteworthy contemporary artists.
Take it from Alan Lescelles, an Atlanta resident who has sailed with Cunard an impressive 40 times and counting. Lescelles treasures every voyage for its trademark blend of tradition, elegance and unexpected surprises. “You’ll always encounter the most interesting guests,” he remarks with a chuckle. “One time, we were sitting with a famous musician from the 1960s and ‘70s – Roger McGuinn who founded The Byrds! There’s often distinguished politicians, famous generals . . . all kinds of people.”
In addition to intriguing folks to mingle with, Cunard’s numerous amenities are charming and unique. Lescelles fondly recalls how, years ago, when his daughter was only 3, she was invited by her onboard nanny to attend a special tea party for young children inside one of the ship’s finest restaurants – thereby minting a new Cunard fan for life. There’s always something to pique everyone’s interests, according to Lescelles – from “great speakers and entertainers to cooking classes under a chef’s guidance to ballroom dancing to stargazing inside the planetarium.”
“It’s nostalgic in many ways but also very modern – and the internet connection is superb, so you can keep up with reading The Wall Street Journal,” he adds cheekily.
Thirty-five years ago, the desire for unforgettable vacations shared by Cunard guests inspired Howard Moses to launch his travel company, The Cruise and Vacation Authority, located in East Cobb. As of 2023, Moses and his team have helped scores of individuals (and their extended families) spend less time planning their vacations and more time enjoying them — and Cunard is a perennial favorite.
“The Queen Mary is one of the most beautiful ships you’ll ever see: art deco styling, artwork, photography, and touches reminiscent of transatlantic sailing from the mid-20th century,” Moses remarks. “Cunard is a different kind of cruise line — it is more refined and elegant in relaxation.”
Lescelles concurs, as he looks forward to his own upcoming voyage. “We’ll be on the Queen Mary in late May, crossing over to England to catch up with family,” he beams. “Then we’ll spend some time in the Mediterranean. I would highly recommend Cunard for those who want to travel and visit new places.. It’s a great way to see the world.”
