In a field that often balances science, compassion, and real-world complexity, Samantha R. Smalley is part of a new generation of clinicians pushing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) toward a more ethical, individualized, and child-centered future.
Now serving as Chief Clinical Officer at Success on the Spectrum in Bridgewater, Smalley’s work is rooted in a simple but powerful philosophy: everything she does is for the kids.
A Foundation Built on Excellence
Smalley’s path began at Rutgers Graduate School of Education, where she completed her Master of Education in Special Education with an ABA sequence, graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Prior to that, she earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Rutgers University, graduating magna cum laude.
But for Smalley, academic achievement was never the end goal, it was the starting point.
“ABA is a science,” she explains, “but applying it ethically and meaningfully in someone’s life, that’s where the real work begins.”
From Therapist to Clinical Leader
Smalley’s career progression reflects both her technical expertise and her leadership instincts. Beginning as a therapist and case manager at Alpine Learning Group, she quickly developed a reputation for precision, empathy, and strong collaboration with families.
In each role, she deepened her expertise in functional behavior assessments, behavior intervention planning, and data-driven treatment, all while maintaining a clear focus on socially meaningful outcomes for her clients.
Raising the Standard in ABA
Today, as Chief Clinical Officer, Smalley oversees clinical teams ranging from BCBAs to therapists and interns. Her responsibilities include designing individualized treatment programs, supervising staff, and ensuring that every client receives care that is both evidence-based and ethically sound.
Her work centers on key assessments such as:
VB-MAPP
Vineland
FAST
ABLLS
AFLS
But for Samantha, tools are only as good as how they’re used.
“There’s a responsibility in this field,” she says. “We’re not just reducing behaviors, we’re building communication, independence, and quality of life.”
That philosophy extends to her leadership style. She conducts weekly training, mentors clinicians, and emphasizes ongoing education, ensuring that her team doesn’t just follow protocols, but understands the why behind them.
A Child-First Approach
What sets Smalley apart is her unwavering commitment to ethical care. In a field that has faced increasing scrutiny, she is part of a movement advocating for more compassionate, individualized ABA practices.
Her approach includes:
Prioritizing socially valid goals
Collaborating closely with families
Ensuring interventions respect each child’s dignity and autonomy
Using data not just for measurement, but for meaningful decision-making
“Every program should reflect the child, not just a template,” she emphasizes.
Looking Ahead
As ABA continues to evolve, professionals like Samantha Smalley are helping shape its future, one that is more transparent, more ethical, and more centered on the people it serves.
For her, success isn’t measured in charts or graphs, but in moments: a child communicating a need for the first time, a family finding relief, a learner gaining independence.
“That’s what matters,” she says. “At the end of the day, everything we do, it’s for them.”
