These Local Rescues Help Animals Find Safety, Healing, and Homes

Pets bring a lot of laughter, purpose, and joy to our lives. In fact, we often grow to consider our furry friends as members of the family, going above and beyond to give them the care and love they deserve.

The expansive, open land in Weatherford and Parker County is the perfect home for pets of all types. It’s also an ideal location for animal rescues and nonprofits to provide love and care to animals in need. These organizations focus on provisions for elderly, abused, or surrendered animals, and often work towards preparing them for future foster homes—and ultimately adoptive homes.

While there are far too many animal-focused organizations doing good work in the area to list, we’ve chosen to highlight a few that stand out in their field. So if you’re an animal lover looking for ways to support the efforts of local rescues, these are a few of the nonprofits that could use support as they strive to make a positive impact on animal health and happiness in the community.

Golden Reward Sanctuary

Golden Reward is an equine sanctuary situated on over 40 acres in Parker County. This nonprofit’s mission is to love and care for older horses and rehabilitate injured and malnourished animals. While the focus is primarily on horses, Golden Reward Sanctuary also houses dogs and cats. Opportunities to get involved include making donations, sponsoring specific horses or dogs (see the website for more information about animals in need of sponsors), and volunteering for pasture/stall cleanup and animal care.

Weatherford Whiskers

A cat-focused nonprofit, Weatherford Whiskers rescues kittens and cats from local animal shelters. These animals are typically high-risk, meaning placement with a loving foster family is crucial to their survival. At Weatherford Whiskers, the goal is to find each feline a safe foster home where they can receive veterinary care, including vaccinations and spaying/neutering, and prepare to find their adoptive family, where the cats will be cared for and loved for years to come.

Weatherford Wags

Weatherford Wags is committed to saving puppies and dogs, and placing them in permanent, loving homes. This nonprofit rescues dogs from shelters in and around Parker County, while also accepting stray animals and those surrendered by owners unable to care for them. Weatherford Wags meets the needs of dogs by providing food, veterinary care, and secure foster homes. They accept donations, welcome volunteers, and train foster families to care for dogs. Visit their website for ways to support the organization or adopt a dog.

Starr D Ranch

This local equine rescue has played a vital role in the lives of high-risk animals. Starr D Ranch uses its resources to save elderly, abused, or neglected horses and give them a second chance at a happy life. As a nonprofit, they operate on donations from the community to supply the horses with feed and veterinary care. Starr D Ranch also sells merchandise, with the profits providing the animals’ essential needs. Apparel purchases allow community members to showcase their support and make a lasting impact on the lives of these horses.
