Setting the Table - Stylishly!

Creativity Using What You Have

The Thanksgiving Table. It’s the heart and gathering place for family and friends, a place where memories are made and laughs are had. Here are my 5 tips on creating an amazing tablescape for any occasion.

  1. Keep it simple. Entertaining can be fun and a great opportunity to show your creative side but it's important to keep it easy enough for real life. If putting the table together becomes stressful, stop and do less. Simplicity is your friend during the holidays.
  2. Start with a clean slate. Clean everything off the table before you do anything else. It's hard to imagine a new tablescape with your old summer decor still on display or your kids' art supplies scattered across the canvas. Remove it all for nowl you baby able to add it back in later.
  3. Keep dinner plates classic. White or neutral plates are incredibly versatile and can be used for any occasion. If you want something fun or festive add a small decorative salad plate on top.
  4. Textures, textures, textures! Vary textures and finishes. This will add visual interest and take a simple table design up a notch. Napkins, as well as tablecloths, runners, and florals are all great. Do not go matchy-matchy on textures and finishes!
  5. Choose a color scheme and style. Start by Choosing 3-5 colors you want to incorporate. One of my favorite ways to finish off a place setting is with a calligraphy name tag tied up with pine cones, herbs, or a few flowers.
  6. Keep it functional. None of the decor and fancy plates matter if there isn’t enough room on the table to eat comfortably and have a conversation with the person across the table from you. When setting your table, actually take a second to sit down and imagine everyone there and troubleshoot any potential issues.
