When the Arizona Coyotes moved out of state, a local nonprofit set a goal to ensure that the sport of hockey didn't entirely depart from the Grand Canyon State—at least, not without a struggle—and it begins with the next generation.

This is the purpose and mission of Shott's Tots, a youth Learn-to-Play program designed to introduce kids ages 5 to 11 to the game of hockey in a way that is both accessible and affordable. It is offered in cooperation with the National Hockey League, USA Hockey, and local hockey rinks and organizations, including AZ Ice Peoria.

Olympian Lyndsey Fry, President and Founder of the Matt Shott Arizona Hockey Legacy Foundation (AZHockeyLegacy.org), leads the organization.

Shott's Tots is a Personal Mission for Olympian Lyndsey Fry

Shott's Tots is not simply another developmental sports program. For Fry, it's very personal.

“I'm a product of Arizona hockey," says Fry. “I played in college and played in the Olympics for Team USA. I want to provide that opportunity for kids in the Valley. This is about keeping hockey alive in Arizona and honoring my friend who was so committed to making hockey accessible to everyone."

Named after popular Arizona hockey figure and former Coyotes executive Matt Shott—who passed away in 2021—the Shott's Tots program was established to fill a gap in the junior hockey scene around the Valley. The Arizona Coyotes had partnered with the NHL for years to run a local Learn-to-Play program that introduced hundreds of children to the sport. After the team left Arizona, Fry and the Foundation stepped in to ensure those opportunities did not leave with them.

The Shott's Tots Mission

The program operates on the straightforward premise of providing kids with the gear, coaching, and support to try hockey without committing to a substantial or long-term investment.

For $299, the players receive six on-ice instructional sessions and a set of hockey equipment—skates, helmet, stick, pads, and a Shott's Tots jersey. That is a fraction of what most families would invest to start playing hockey, says Fry.

"Traditional hockey clubs can be scary and expensive for families," Fry explains. "We wanted to take that obstacle out and introduce kids to the sport first—to fall in love with it in an informal, relaxed setting."

What Schott's Tots Offers to Hockey-Loving Families in North Peoria

The low-cost youth hockey program has already attracted many families in North Peoria. Shott's Tots programs take place at AZ Ice Peoria, where beginners learn fundamental hockey skills in a friendly and inviting atmosphere. Kids can then progress into AZ Ice’s more advanced programs, which include Cubs, Mini Mites, and local youth leagues.

“We’re planting seeds for the future,” says Fry. “These are the future players, fans, and ambassadors of hockey in Arizona. Something we need here in the Valley.”

In addition to stickhandling and skating drills, the program instills values far beyond the rink, including confidence, teamwork, and perseverance.

“We’re not just building hockey players,” Fry emphasizes. “We’re helping kids learn life skills. That’s what Matt Shott cared about most, making sure everyone had a chance to play, grow, and be part of something.”

How to Get Your Little Ones Involved in Schott's Tots

Year-round sessions are offered for those interested in joining, with new schedules added continuously. Parents are welcome to reach out online, where they can find the latest registration information before each new session.

With the August back-to-school season approaching, Shott's Tots offers families an excellent opportunity to introduce their children to a new sport. Fry encourages participation as a special way for kids to discover new interests.

She says Shott's Tots is a wonderful place to begin. "If the kid plays hockey for a year or becomes the next Olympian, it doesn't matter; they were there, learned, and discovered the game for themselves."

Throughout Peoria and beyond, the passion for hockey is alive and thriving—and continuing to grow, thanks to Shott's Tots.
