In our Valley, we do our best to lead an intentional lifestyle. Our community prides itself in supporting local. Buying our organic produce at Finley Farms, shopping at local boutiques, enjoying locally grown and produced wines, this list goes on… These priorities encourage a slower, more thoughtful, and quality way of living.
Generally, in today's world, you can't help but notice a demand for more. Fast Fashion is quickly produced trends sold at low price points. While this availability and access can be tempting, this trend has nefarious undertones that have long-standing consequences for our planet. According to CoherentMI, in the USA, Fast Fashion was worth “$41.15 Billion in 2023 and is anticipated to reach $59.85 Billion by 2030.” This leads to overconsumption, overproduction, and a wasteful, meaningless purpose. Fast Fashion merchandise tends to use inexpensive, synthetic fabrics like polyester, which shed microfibers over time - ending up in landfills and our water systems.
On the flip side of this trend, Slow Fashion focuses on making thoughtful decisions about your wardrobe, buying less but buying quality pieces, and shopping vintage, and earth-friendly fibers. Shopping with purpose leads you to a wardrobe that stands the test of time, in style and quality.
Here are our suggestions for an authentic, sustainable look that feels oh so Santa Ynez.
Entry 1: A Great Pair of Cowboy Boots
We find ourselves reaching for these most days, due to their versatile, authentic SY feel. Find a great vintage pair that has that worn-in, loved look! We love boots with everything - from your best jeans to a summer dress, and you’ll find Julie White styling them with a cool pair of LeBon sweats.
Entry 2: Earth-Friendly Fibers
Choosing the fabrics you wear on your body is not only a sustainable choice, but a healthy one! Buying organic cotton reduces the amount of toxins you're exposed to, and also lessens the amount of pesticides in our water supply. Choose fabrics that are long lasting, and feel good to wear! Think Linen, Organic cotton, and Tencel (a newer fabric made from sustainable wood pulp!) Honest Cotton is a brand we love!
Entry 3: A Good Pair of Jeans
Too much stretch, too short or too long, and trendy embellishments can make it feel impossible to find a great pair. Our suggestion is to stick with a flattering fit with minimal stretch, in a cut that is universally flattering and timeless. We love Levis 501s, or our new favorite brand Daze has nailed the effortless denim vibe - it’s our new eco-friendly go-to!
Entry 4: Dresses… dresses… dresses… forever!
Our hearts are forever in love with feminine silhouettes and dresses that make you feel beautiful no matter the occasion. A breathable cotton dress with a beautiful block print can take you to brunch with friends, the Solvang farmers market, or the school pick-up line. My favorite sustainable brands include Christy Dawn, Spell, and Kivari.
