Stay protected outdoors in Knoxville’s sun-filled season

In Knoxville, summer means long days on the lake, weekend hikes, bike rides and plenty of time outdoors. While it may not be the beach, East Tennessee sun exposure adds up quickly. At Aesthetic Elevation, we encourage a smart, layered approach to protecting your skin all season long.

1. Choose the Right Sunscreen: Mineral vs. Chemical

Mineral (physical) sunscreens—made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide—sit on the skin’s surface and reflect harmful UVA and UVB rays. They work immediately and are ideal for sensitive or post-procedure skin.

Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. They tend to feel lighter and more invisible on the skin, which many people prefer for daily wear or outdoor activities. Both options are effective when labeled “broad-spectrum.” The key is choosing one you’ll use consistently.

2. Upgrade to Nano Mineral Formulas

Modern nano mineral sunscreens offer the same reliable protection with a more sheer, blendable finish. This makes reapplication easier (and more likely), especially during active summer days when you don’t want a heavy or chalky feel.

3. Add Physical Barriers Outdoors

Think beyond sunscreen. Wide-brim hats, UV-blocking sunglasses and lightweight protective clothing provide essential backup—especially during peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. These are key for long hikes, boating days and outdoor workouts.

4. Reapply—Especially on the Go

Sweat, water and sun exposure break down protection. Reapply SPF 30 or higher every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating. Don’t forget easy-to-miss areas like your ears, neck, chest and hands.

5. Protect Now, Preserve Later

Consistent protection helps prevent premature aging, sun spots and long-term skin damage. Healthy skin isn’t just about appearance—it’s about longevity.

Knoxville summers are meant to be enjoyed. With the right sun protection habits, you can stay active outdoors while keeping your skin healthy and radiant.
