Keeping the Beat

This local teen is living his dream with a smile, a huge heart, and a load of good vibes

Cooper Logan, aka DJ Lil’ Coop, is kind of a big deal. Like many kids his age, he’s into sports, enjoys playing his XBox, and chills out with his favorite tunes.

However, at only 13 years old, this humble and easy-going kid has taken his love of music to the next level as an up-and-coming disc jockey with a robust schedule of bookings. From his first gig with iheart radio to races, fundraisers, weddings, and school events, DJ Lil’ Coop brings music to your ears and inspiration to many people’s hearts.

At the early age of 3, Cooper was hospitalized after suddenly becoming very sick with Kawasaki Disease.

The pediatric illness of unknown cause has a 10-day treatment window which in Cooper’s case was missed by 2.5 days. As a result of the late diagnosis, Cooper suffered a significant coronary aneurysm. He now lives with an aneurysm as well as stage 4 kidney failure. He has undergone an abundance of medical treatment in his young life and will need more in the future. Yet his daily medical challenges are not the focus of his time, energy, and spirit.

Instead, this smiling and big-hearted teen is living his dream of entertaining others via his love of music. He has elevated his game from being a rookie DJ with the most basic skills and equipment to becoming a polished and professional entertainer who continues to master his craft.

His favorite booking so far was working the MLB All-Star Game Fanfest in Denver, although he admits he does love entertaining his peers at school events and proms. He loves to deliver happiness to people at their important events. “Cooper is an inspiration to so many people. He has a heart of gold and cares more about others than he does himself,” comments his dad and manager, Shawn.

Cooper has developed his skills under the wings of some well-known names in the industry. Denver-based DJ Walt White has been an asset to Cooper as a supporter and mentor. Cooper has also been positively influenced by working alongside DJ Zimbo of Colorado State University Athletics at CSU sporting events. Cooper is a huge sports fan so when you see him behind the board he will undoubtedly be donning one of the many athletic jerseys he loves to wear.

He is also an advocate for Kawasaki Kids Foundation (kawasakikidsfoundation.org), the non-profit organization founded by his parents following his diagnosis which focuses on finding a cure for the disease.

Cooper takes one day at a time, does what he loves, and serves others. What a simple yet wise life strategy that we might all seek to employ: just chill.
