As the Texas sun begins to shine a little brighter, Southern Star Brewing Company in Conroe is ready to welcome guests and is fully invested in having an exciting spring and summer season. After a chilly winter and months of extensive renovations, the beloved brewery is poised for a massive year, bringing fresh energy, enhanced facilities, and, of course, incredible craft beer to the community.
A Legacy of Craft Beer Innovation
Founded in 2007, Southern Star Brewing Company has long been a pioneer in the Texas craft beer scene. Now owned by Walter and Susan Galdenzi, the brewery holds the distinction of being the first in Texas to can craft beer, forever changing the landscape of independent brewing in the state. The brewery's commitment to quality and innovation is evident in its diverse lineup of beers, crafted under the expertise of brewmaster Henryk Orlik. With a background in German brewing traditions and a resume that includes developing the legendary Purple Haze and Turbo Dog for Abita Brewing, Orlik brings a wealth of experience to the Southern Star brand.
A New Look, A Bright Future
After an eight-month renovation, Southern Star is unveiling a fresh, revitalized taproom and expanded outdoor spaces, ensuring an even better experience for visitors. The brewery sits on a sprawling 14-acre property, offering a spacious biergarten with patio seating for several hundred guests, three bars, and a stage for live music. With new taproom management in place and plans for a full kitchen in the works, visitors can expect an upgraded experience featuring great beer, delicious food, and an unbeatable atmosphere.
2025 is shaping up to be a major year for Southern Star. Currently producing 8,000 barrels of beer annually, the brewery has its sights set on nearly doubling production to 15,000 barrels by the end of the year. With increased capacity and distribution through major retailers like H-E-B, Spec’s, Total Wine, and Kroger, Southern Star’s reach is only growing.
The Beer: A Lineup to Love
Southern Star’s flagship beers have been staples in the craft beer world for years, including the Bombshell Blonde, a crisp American blonde ale, the hoppy Pine Belt Pale Ale, and the amazing Buried Hatchet Stout. However, to me, if there’s one beer that truly embodies the spirit of patio weather, it’s Southern Brunch.
This citrusy shandy is a game-changer—bursting with bright, refreshing citrus flavors that will make you forget about mimosas forever. It’s the perfect brunch companion, a beer made for those who claim they don’t like beer but will fall in love with this one. Imagine a Blue Moon, but exactly how you always wished that it tasted. Whether you’re sipping on the patio with friends or stocking up for a poolside afternoon, Southern Brunch is the ultimate warm-weather brew.
Beyond the flagship favorites, the taproom offers exclusive small-batch brews that can’t be found in any of the countless retail locations. Fans can also enjoy seasonal releases and experimental brews that showcase the brewery’s dedication to creativity and craftsmanship.
Events, Community, and Good Times Ahead
Southern Star Brewing Company isn’t just about the beer—it’s about the experience. Their commitment to community engagement shines through in their jam-packed events calendar. As the warm weather rolls in, the brewery is set to host a variety of exciting gatherings, including crawfish boils in April, a Sour Beer Festival, and a May 4th Star Wars-themed event that promises to be out of this galaxy.
On top of these can’t-miss events, Southern Star regularly features live music, food trucks, and other festivities that bring people together. While a new and revamped kitchen is coming, The Webster Melting Company food truck is a staple at the brewery, offering tasty bites to pair with your favorite pint.
