Before my family moved to Flower Mound, the only knowledge I had of Dallas was gleaned from the classic television show that my mother, sister and I faithfully devoted our Friday nights to in the 1980s. We never missed a single scandalous episode.

When my family moved here seven years ago, one of my top priorities was to visit the iconic Southfork Ranch in person, but we never got around to it. But when I learned that the Third Monday Trade Days, previously held in McKinney, had been moved to Southfork, I knew I must make the trek.

Third Monday Trade Days are the oldest and largest monthly trade day event in North Texas. The market dates back to the late 1800s and had been held one weekend a month in the same location in McKinney since the 1960s.  But, after more than 60 years, the McKinney market sadly closed in December after owners Darrell and Karen Lewis announced their retirement.

However, much to the delight of DFW residents, it was announced that the legendary market would resume in another location in January. And the new location is almost as legendary as the market itself.

I jumped at the chance to visit Southfork and the new Trade Day location during its opening weekend, and it did not disappoint. More than 200 booths were set up just south of the famous mansion.

The vendors were as varied as one’s imagination and included antiques, furniture, clothing, candles, honey, furniture, lawn decorations… You name it. Shop owners were friendly. The prices were reasonable. And the location was pure Dallas.

I highly recommend visiting the new Southfork Third Monday Trade Days for an outing and shopping adventure. It is the perfect place to bring guests, as well, to give them a true “Dallas” experience.
