Spreading Love and Healing Inside and Out

Celebrity Stylist Avian King sat down with Bellevue Lifestyle to talk about her career in hair. After an impressive professional trajectory around the country and world, she's working at Joe Bae Salon in Bellevue. Thinking about making a haircut change for the holidays? Something to freshen up your look in the New Year? Or maybe you'd just like to have your hair professionally styled for a festive gala? Avian can help!

Share with us a little bit about your background in the industry.

Not long after starting my career in Seattle, I moved to New York City to pursue my dream of working in fashion. I participated in sixteen seasons of New York Fashion Week, and had my work featured on the covers of magazines such as Elle Man, Esquire, L’Officiel Homme, Amazing Magazine, as well as within the pages of Vogue, GQ, Flaunt, and Paper Magazine.

After a decade of working in fashion, I left NYC and moved to Los Angeles to work in entertainment. There I styled hair for music videos, commercials, celebrity appearances, and print advertisements for beauty and fashion campaigns.

The opportunity to travel the globe to share the art and craft of hairdressing on stages, in classrooms, and salons has been an important part of my career. My mentors include renowned stylists Vivienne Mackinder, Angelo Seminara, and Martin-Christopher Harper.

After returning to the Seattle area for a more balanced life, I am a yoga teacher, reiki master, health coach, and sound healer in training. Spreading love and healing inside and out.

What trends are you seeing right now in haircuts and color?

The trends that I am seeing right now for cuts are beautiful blunt bobs, flowy layers, cheekbone skimming facial framing and curtain bangs, and big beautiful 90’s blowouts. I am not a colorist, but the trends that I am seeing are beautiful natural colors, as well as bold statement shades.

For all of those holiday parties our readers are attending around this time, can you give any styling advice for hair styling for parties or special occasions?

For all the holiday parties this year, some styling advice is to take it slow and keep it simple. Focus on one thing, maybe it’s a sleek low chignon with a statement pin or a side part, or a pony with a little rhinestone bobby pin to wrap the base. If wearing it down, a loose flowy wave finished with a little wave spray for some separation (R&Co Bleu Wave Spray), possibly tucking one side behind the ear. Adding a sparkly hair accessory will always add a little holiday flair- think diamond bobby pin, a pin with a pearl, or a metal shiny pin for twists and buns.

What is the best way for a new client to make an appointment with you?

The best way to schedule with me for a haircut, bridal, extensions, special occasion styles, or men’s grooming, is to call Joe Bae Salon at (425) 519-9951. A new client can also check out my website at avianking.com, or connect with me on instagram at @avianking and @aviankinghair_.
