The Cocktail In-Between

Enjoy This Season-Transitioning Cocktail Snow or Shine

Oh, Colorado Spring, what a conundrum you are. Since March is Colorado’s snowiest month, a light and spritzy cocktail didn’t seem right  We created this Negroni-like craft cocktail with Colorado spring in mind. Whether you are tilling the garden soil or shoveling the sidewalk, this cocktail is bright like spring’s tulips, with the body and complexity called for on a winter’s day.

Colorado’s own Deerhammer Rye adds depth of flavor and smokiness, alongside complex citrus spiciness of Campari. A dash of cherry reminds you of winter’s Old Fashioned, and fresh orange helps the palate anticipate the coming warmer months.

1.75 oz. rye whiskey

1.25 oz Campari

1 oz red vermouth

Fine cocktail cherries in syrup*

Orange slices

Muddle (1) cherry inside highball glass. Pour rye, Campari, red vermouth and a small splash of cherry juice into a cocktail shaker. Add ice or mixing cubes and shake vigorously until shaker is almost frosty. Pour over fresh rocks ice and squeeze orange over top.  Garnish with orange peel if desired. Serves 2

*these can be found in liquor stores or online. Stay away from the bright red artificial maraschino cherries found in the grocery store.
