Nomad Coffee Shop Keeps It Local

Though a nomadic life can be all about the journey, Nomad Coffee hopes locals will tuck into the shop’s plush couches, enjoy unobstructed mountain views while sipping a latte or cortado, and stay awhile.

Nomad opened this summer on Colorado Springs’ northeast side. Amy Esquivel, who manages its operations, and assistant manager Timary Hodge aim to foster conversation and community through coffee. “We knew how we wanted people to feel when they walked in,” Esquivel says. “That’s what we’re trying to bring to life here.”

A modern boho aesthetic offers guests a space that is bright and welcoming while paying homage to a nomad’s journey with repurposed decor throughout. Esquivel and Hodge were intentional with their design choices, thrifting wherever they could. Vintage suitcases offset subway tile and modern black-and-white-accented palettes, while lived-in leather and potted plants create a living room vibe.

“We’re trying to be the next chapter here, for whatever is next,” Esquivel says of the space, which serves not only as a coffee house but also as a creative outlet for her and Hodge. “Make a connection, have a place to work, meet a friend. Just enjoy the views. Take a few moments. Treat yourself.”

Nomad prioritizes community partnerships—they exclusively serve espresso from local roaster Hold Fast Coffee Company, which was integral in the behind-the-scenes development of Nomad. The coffee shop also stocks products from local brands and businesses including Roadrunner Bookshop, Jelly Madness and The Springs Bagel Company.

In addition to offering classic java beverages and seasonal menus (current staff favorites include the curry chicken salad and the Sun Chaser, a bagel topped with egg, bacon, avocado and chili crunch), Nomad is a gathering space with plans to host book clubs, yoga sessions and markets. Cookie decorating and wreath making events are in the works for this fall and winter.

“We want to employ people in the community,” Esquivel says. “We want to be a space that keeps the money here, locally. It’s important for all small businesses.”
