Step After Step, Stair After Stair

We started at the base of Diamond Hill in Ireland’s Connemara National Park and stared up at its grand peak. Surely, that was not where the trail was taking us.

The path started easily, with boardwalks winding through flower-filled meadows and tall grasses. Eventually, the boardwalks gave way to gravel inclines, bringing us closer to the base of the mountain before us. At a fork in the path, we had the option to turn back and continue the easier loop through the meadows.

We chose up.

The incline steepened, and the trail turned into stair after stair. The wind began to blow harder, at one point strong enough to make us stumble and slide. Step after step, stair after stair, we kept climbing.

Every once in a while, I turned back to take in the view as we moved higher and higher. The sea sparkled in the afternoon sun, and clouds rested gently on the tops of the surrounding mountain peaks.

Step after step, stair after stair.

We climbed one side of the mountain until we finally reached the flatter heights near the top. The wind was stronger now, but this time it felt freeing. Almost celebratory, like a reward for making it into the clouds and seeing the full expanse of the valley below us.

We were the only ones at the top that day. Below us were the manor, the lakes, the fields and the flowers that had once been close enough to touch, now just small shades of yellow across the countryside. Beyond it all, the ocean sparkled in the distance.

We continued across the top, enjoying the easier steps and the beautiful views. Then, on the other side of the mountain, we began our descent.

The way down looked so far. The people below looked so tiny. Yet, step after step, stair after stair, time passed. We paused to look back at where we had been, watching the mountain grow larger again as we made our way lower.

We did that.

We climbed that.

Eventually, the stairs turned back into gravel, and the gravel turned back into boardwalks through the meadows. The flowers returned around us. Near the end, we came across a quiet field where a horse was nursing its foal, with the afternoon light glowing softly in the background.

Peace.

After the howling wind of the mountaintop, there was calm. The effort was done. The hike was coming to an end. We stood in silence and simply enjoyed it.

Somewhere on the way down, after the wind softened and the boardwalk returned beneath our feet, I realized how much the hike resembled the pursuit of any meaningful goal.

From the bottom, the summit had looked impossibly far away. But we did not climb it all at once. We climbed it one step at a time.

The same is true in life, and often in financial planning. Whether the goal is retirement, education funding, a business transition, financial independence, caring for family, the transition after the loss of a loved one or simply a greater sense of peace … the full climb can feel overwhelming from the beginning.

But progress rarely happens all at once. It happens through a clear destination, a thoughtful path and the next right step.

And the summit is not the only part worth celebrating. There is value in the effort, the views along the way, the moments of rest, the progress already made, and the perspective gained by looking back and saying, “We did that.”

For many clients, the path toward a meaningful financial goal can feel a lot like standing at the base of that mountain. At PYA Waltman, our role is to walk alongside them as they climb. We help clarify the destination, map the path forward, adjust when the trail changes and pause to recognize the progress already made.

Step after step, stair after stair, the climb becomes clearer, the progress becomes visible, and the peace of mind they have worked toward starts to come into view.
