For 14 years, Story Tapestries has been a collaborator in Montgomery County, offering arts programming to all ages. “Art and creativity are an integral part of life; how we facilitate problem-solving,” says Arianna Ross, the founder and director of the organization.
Story Tapestries recognizes the complexities of diverse communities and designs programs that are customized to address barriers, including economics, mental health, accessibility, and culture. Their work reaches a wide variety of people. For example, through a digital literacy class, an unhoused man builds confidence and pursues job opportunities. In an early childhood setting, a child creates art from their mistakes and celebrates learning differences. An educator, through a training program, can support students facing trauma.
Participants, artists, and volunteers love the chance to uplift their spirit and integrate the arts into their daily lives. “We could show data and statistics about the positive outcomes of our programming, but what really matters is the cycle of engagement, giving, and giving back that we foster,” says Ross.
Getting involved in the programs isn’t limited to professional artists. Volunteers also organize book and art supply drives, and other uses of their time, talent, and treasure. Notably, the Love Notes program involves volunteers writing encouraging notes to program participants to give them a boost. According to Ross, “Something as small as a word of encouragement or a smile can make a difference.”
Story Tapestries has the tools and community connections to reach people in need of support, their educators, and their families with a unique set of resources and services that engage participants in arts activities to boost learning and increase cultural capital. Ultimately, it helps participants overcome barriers while also increasing an important ingredient in their daily lives: joy.
