Local Studio Creates Hollywood Movie Magic in Dripping Springs

A shiny, sleek BMW sedan streaks across the screen, through a majestic mountain terrain under a perfectly blue sky. It’s easy to visualize the movie scene or commercial. It’s harder to imagine that the visual was created in Dripping Springs.

Stray Vista Studios innovates with unique technology that allows for a revolutionary shift in filmmaking. Founder Nate Strayer gave DSCL a tour of this world-class facility and told us about the work his team is doing.

What does Stray Vista offer and how is it different?

Virtual Production is the mixing of 3 different industries, live entertainment, video games and film. We’re mixing LED panels that are traditionally used at concerts with video game engines and using them for motion pictures. Stray Vista is at the forefront of this innovative way of doing things. We are filmmakers first. We’re not a technology company helping make films, we’re filmmakers using exciting technology as a tool built to improve the experience.

Why build this in Dripping Springs?

We were drawn to the community feeling. Believe it or not, many high-profile filmmakers live in Dripping Springs because they want to raise their families here, live quietly and enjoy what Texas has to offer. The team at Stray Vista feels the same way. We wanted to bring the work to the community where we want to live.

Areas on the rise creatively can be cutthroat and competitive. We don’t feel that here. Texas in general, and especially Dripping, is truly a place where the rising tide will raise all ships. As we innovate, create and share stories, we hope others do as well.

Tell us about some notable projects.

We’ve only been open a year and have worked with actors such as Simu Liu, Hannibal Buress and Druski, as well as musicians like Paul Wall, Los Lonely Boys, and Shane Smith & the Saints. We’ve done commercials with Google, Sega, Cadillac, the U.S. Air Force, Dell, Intel, AMD and many others. Our favorite projects have all been in service to telling a story.

What's next?

Stray Vista is a dream of filmmakers, and our goal is to raise the bar of storytelling, whether in advertisements or narrative films. We want to help anyone with a story find the best way possible to tell it. The future for Stray Vista looks like more stories being told right here in Dripping Springs.
