Unlike most teens, Tyler Logan knows vocabulary words like regatta, ILCA, and tacking. And rather than hanging out at a mall, he makes friends down at Lake Ray Hubbard. If you haven’t guessed already, Tyler is a sailor, and even though he’s only 16 years old, he’s traveled all over the USA to compete. His mom, Karen, jokes that Tyler has water, rather than blood, running through his veins. After all, Tyler has been on the water since he was only two weeks old.
Alongside his mom and his dad, Jeremy, Tyler first experienced sailing on the waters of Lake Champlain in Vermont, but since moving to Rockwall in 2018, Tyler has taken on the sport himself. His first experience sailing a small, single-handed sailing dinghy known as an Opti in 2021 has led him to spending thousands of hours on the water over the past few years. Miami, L.A., and Chicago are all places where he has set sail. Tyler even travels to Houston multiple times a month to practice sailing on Galveston Bay. These different experiences have allowed him to forge friendships with other young sailors all over the world who keep in touch via social media.
Tyler gives back to other young sailors too, through volunteering as a sailing coach, and even volunteering his family’s truck to help transport boats to competitions. When asked about his favorite place in Rockwall, he quickly responded, “Rush Creek Yacht Club.”
What keeps him coming back? “The water's warm now, so I can just go out and sail. Sometimes I’ll just go out with a friend and surf.” It’s a simple pleasure, but it keeps him focused on learning, growing, and helping others around him.
