Ever look at Aftab Pureval and think: he has great hair?
Well, you’re not alone. The Cincinnati mayor’s stylish look is due in fair part to this guy…
Meet hairstylist Kenji Cummings.
He’s the owner of CoCo Creative Wellness in Columbia Tusculum. When we arrived, we found Mayor Pureval in Kenji’s chair getting his signature cut.
But you won’t find them talking politics, Kenji is quick to point out.
At CoCo, they’re all about maintaining a welcoming environment for everyone and creating Instagram-worthy style. That means leaving things like politics and religion at the door.
Kenji says, “I have high standards for my team, but it really comes down to three things. Work hard. Do really good work. And don’t be a jerk.”
Kindness and honesty are at the core of CoCo Creative Wellness. Kenji explains that establishing expectations during the consultation is a key focus for his team. Their goal is to help clients achieve their desired look, while being realistic about what their specific hair type will do and what kind of daily preparation it will take.
According to Kenji, “Ninety percent of the time, people who have really great hair take time to style their hair. So, if you’re never going to do that, you’re not going to have hair like the pictures you bring in to show us. Great hair takes practice. Spend the time to learn and do it.”
And, yes, Kenji practices what he preaches. His flowing locks are just part of the intentionally curated look he’s built over the years. He says the key is focusing on quality clothing and accessories over fast fashion.
The same applies to hair. Kenji advises clients, “If the trend doesn’t fit you, don’t do the trend - especially when it comes to hair. Great hair wins over trendy hair every time.”
If you’re unsure, ask your stylist for advice. That’s one reason building relationships with clients, like the one he has with Aftab, is incredibly important to Kenji and his team at Coco Creative.
“We want people to come back again and again and again,” Kenji shares. That’s why good communication and great style are the winning combination at CoCo Creative Wellness.
Kenji’s Top Hair Tips:
For Young People: Experiment with your hair. Try everything. Find what works for you and what doesn’t. Then try something else.
For Parents: Let your kids experiment with their hair. You’ll have lots of other things to fight about. Hair shouldn’t be one of them.
For Everyone Else: If the trend doesn’t fit you, don’t do the trend - especially when it comes to hair. Great hair wins over trendy hair every time.
