For most of her adult life, Sandee June's uniform consisted of scrubs, comfortable shoes and long shifts caring for others. Today, the lifelong Texan is more likely to be found wearing handcrafted boots, a carefully chosen stage outfit and a guitar slung over her shoulder.
It's a remarkable second act.
Born in Galveston and raised in Santa Fe, Texas, June spent nearly three decades as a registered nurse, specializing in cardiothoracic surgery before later moving into recovery room nursing. Music had always lived quietly in her heart, but it wasn't until her children were grown and her grandchildren arrived that she finally gave herself permission to try something new.
"I actually did everything backwards," June said with a laugh. "I started my family first, then went back to nursing school with four children. Then, after I turned 50, I decided to learn to play guitar."
She taught herself to play guitar through YouTube videos, took online vocal lessons, started attending open mic nights and eventually released her first single during the pandemic. What began as a personal challenge has evolved into one of Texas Country's most inspiring success stories.
Over the past year alone, she has celebrated three consecutive No. 1 songs on the Texas charts, culminating with her latest chart-topper, "June's Honky Tonk Moon." She also earned New Female Vocalist of the Year honors at the 2026 Texas Regional Radio Music Awards.
During her award acceptance speech, June made a point of mentioning that she began her music career later in life – a message she hopes resonates with anyone who's convinced they've missed their opportunity.
"My mama always said, 'Honey, don't die with your music still inside,' and my daddy always said, 'I don't care how old you get, don't ever stop learning something new,'" she said. "I really want to inspire other people. I don't know where this journey is taking me, but I'm just going to let God open whatever door He sees fit, and I'm going to walk right through it."
That authenticity extends far beyond her music.
June's stage wardrobe reflects the same grounded confidence that has become her trademark. Rather than chasing flashy trends, she prefers timeless country style that feels genuine.
"I like to stand out, but still be conservative," she explained. "I like to stay classy and stylish and true to country."
Once she chooses the outfit, the accessories follow. One piece is always with her – a delicate cross necklace given to her years ago by her husband, Ed.
"It just gives me comfort," she added. "If I'm not wearing it, I usually put it in my pocket. It gets rid of any nerves."
She also carries another treasured keepsake – a worn guitar pick she's used since teaching herself to play.
"I've used that same guitar pick for every single show I've ever done," added June.
While fans know June for her performances, her creativity is equally evident inside her home, where her music room has become both a sanctuary and a source of inspiration.
Filled with warm lighting, rich colors, vintage treasures and meaningful family heirlooms, the room feels less like a studio and more like a place where stories come alive.
"I love warm colors and lots of lamps," she said. "It creates a moody, really nice vibe. The ambiance sets the tone for music and creating."
Nearly every piece carries a memory. A velvet tie-dye artwork her mother created when June was just five years old serves as the room's focal point.
"If it could speak," she said, "the stories it would tell, and the music it's heard."
Those personal touches, much like June herself, blend Texas roots with heartfelt authenticity.
For a woman who once hung up her scrubs thinking one chapter had ended, life has revealed something unexpected: sometimes the most meaningful calling arrives after you've already lived an entire career. And for Sandee June, that new chapter is only getting started.
