When did you know you wanted to be an interior designer?
When I moved into my first apartment. I always enjoyed creating a unique space. I enjoyed seeing fully designed spaces with all the intentional details that give a visual impact and wow factor.
What was your childhood like? Were you always redecorating your room or trying to rearrange it?
I was limited with my childhood room. However, in college I constantly updated my dorm room. I enjoyed creating my side of the room to be my own perfect escape. I loved adding color, making wall decor, and adding pictures of family and friends.
What does “home” mean to you?
Home is where I can relax, be comfortable, and be my authentic self.
What is your favorite type of room to decorate?
I love decorating a family room. I enjoy hosting and that is where people gather. So anytime someone wants to update their space to host parties I enjoy making it functional and beautiful. I also enjoy adding a unique conversation starter.
Who are some designers you look to for inspiration?
Corey Jenkins, Libby Langdon, Celerie Kemble. They each have a unique and bold style.
What are your three key style tips?
- Scale is so important in design. Make sure a piece fits the space especially when it comes to art.
- Use greenery, it adds so much life to a space.
- Mix and match metals!
Where is the best place to start when you want to change something in your home?
I would start with setting a realistic budget. From there you can decide which projects to tackle. Remodeling a kitchen or primary bathroom will cost more than updating your bedroom decor. So deciding how much you want to invest is a starting point. It also depends on your lifestyle. If you are always hosting you may want to focus on the family areas. If you are not exactly the hosting family perhaps the primary bedroom where you can retreat to after a long day.
What room is your favorite in your house?
My backyard is my favorite place to be. We have a pool so I enjoy spending our summers creating memories in the pool, eating dinner outdoors, and watching my girls practice their dance moves in the grass.
What is something you wish others knew?
I enjoy wine and I am a sommelier. Wine & Design are my favorite things. Follow my other business Wine Spencer for all things wine.
