Summer means fun in the sun, long days at the beach or just soaking up the rays with friends.

It can also wreak havoc on your hair. Hot weather, salt water, chlorine and UV rays from the sun can damage hair, causing frizziness, breakage and faded color. Luckily, products and tips exist that can save your locks from lackluster looks in the summer months.

"Your hair can get extremely dry and have excess breakage in the summer," says Mariah Corser, hair care specialist with Salon Exclusive, 4225 W. Memorial, Suite 103. "Just like your skin, your hair needs protection from the sun, especially if you are out at the lake, in swimming pools or at the beach."

One of the ways Salon Exclusive repairs hair is with a clarifying wash to remove chlorine and other impurities, followed by a deep conditioning mask.

"We use Kerastase treatments, which can last four to six weeks on your hair," Mariah says. "We can even customize the conditioning treatment in case you need more moisture or detangler. It also has UV protection."

At home, using a bit of the Kerastase treatment daily on damp hair as a leave-in can also help keep summer hair shiny and healthy, she says. Glazes and toners can also be used to help restore pigment and give hair color more longevity.

"Some simple ways to protect longer hair is to wear braids, which keep it from getting tangled and wearing a hat," Mariah says.

Leave-in heat protectants and conditioners will also protect the hair from brutal sun, wind and heat.

Products can make all the difference for hair. Try Kerastase Beach Wave Effect Spray, Thermique with UV and heat protection or the Living Proof line of leave-in conditioners and protectant sprays.

"Get a regular trim. Trims help hair grow healthier and will keep hair from breaking as often," Mariah says.
