As we have seen more and more manufacturers evolving into the electric car space many continue to muddle their way into the EV market. Coming in with small steps, watered down performance and leaving many features to still be desired. Porsche’s new Taycan lineup reverses the typical evolution with a top-down approach. Inspired and built with Porsche precision and intelligence, the Taycan Base 4S, Turbo and Turbo S models all exude the best of what Porsche has to offer and has always brought to the driving experience.
I had the pleasure of being able to work with the top-notch team at Porsche of Colorado Springs in coordinating a driving experience with the new Taycan 4S. although a step below the Turbo and Turbo S, the 4S might be the ideal vehicle for all Colorado driving conditions. All wheel drive, 522 horsepower and zero to 60 in 3.8 seconds leaves nothing more to be desired. Although powerful enough to put on the track or to compete in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, the Taycan 4S delivers the smoothest and comfortable rides on the road today. This car is one that delivers you in style for dinner at the Broadmoor, and the back seat leg room would allow you to take your kids to hockey and gymnastics practice comfortably, gear and all.
I have a kid who is a ski racer. My wife and I do an incredible amount of driving in the snow. And let’s be real… everyone likes to play in the snow, including sports cars. So, was I going to let an opportunity like this go by without allowing this Porsche Taycan 4S to have some fun too?
After being briefed on the Porsche Taycan’s instrument panel and operational details by Justin Underwood at Porsche of Colorado Springs, I started my trip, heading home to the old north end and finally starting up highway 24. As the road starts to wind past Manitou, I enter the canyon feeling the Taycan gripping he road like a roller coaster. The Taycan positions all the batteries in the bottom of the vehicle, lowering the center of gravity, enhancing the attachment and grip to the road. Additionally, the taycan comes in weighing nearly 2 tons, contributing to the grounded and safe feel the vehicle delivers. After passing through Woodland Park and Divide it starts to get fun. Heading up Wilkerson Pass there are some straight-always that encouraged me to test the acceleration. I slowed down to 10 miles per hour, stepped on the “go” pedal, and was up to 75 mph before I could blink. The response is immediate, no lag, no turbo windup, just BAM! As I crested Wilkerson pass and the Collegiate Range came into view, I enjoyed the ride down on to South Park, where you can really test some of the acceleration. The Porsche Taycan 4S is just a fun car to drive.
Starting at $103,000, the entry point is reasonable in the scheme of Porsche. Start adding some of the features and that price will grow but remains realistic for a car of this caliber. This is a car that deserves a test drive, for everyone. Especially those who are in the market for an all-electric vehicle and for those who have appreciated performance in their driving experience. The efficiency, function, safety, and performance boxes all check off on the Taycan 4S.
