Rooftop gathering spaces naturally invite people to linger. At The Perch, panoramic Blue Ridge Mountain views provide the backdrop, but the rooftop at The Virginia Guesthouse was also designed to offer more than scenery.
Conceived as the hotel’s “crown jewel,” The Perch combines indoor and outdoor spaces where guests can settle in after a long day, meet friends or colleagues, listen to live music, and watch the landscape change with the light. The atmosphere is intentionally relaxed, with bites and drinks perfect for both casual and more formal get-togethers.
That philosophy carries into a menu rooted in Virginia ingredients and traditions while drawing inspiration from farther away. Shareable small plates combine regional flavors with global influences, while the cocktail program finds creative ways to connect the past and present.
The Cavalier Club, for example, reimagines an Old Fashioned with Dr Pepper demerara, a nod to the soft drink’s namesake, Dr. Charles T. Pepper, who attended the University of Virginia. Wahoo Whiskey offers another local connection. Developed by UVA alumnus W. L. Lyons Brown III, the six-year-old bourbon is poured exclusively at The Virginia Guesthouse and its sister property, Boar’s Head Resort.
During The Perch’s first summer, Charlottesville residents were among the first to discover the rooftop. As the seasons changed, the crowd expanded to include visitors relaxing after exploring Grounds, faculty and students gathering for drinks, and coworkers arriving for an end-of-day happy hour.
That happy hour, playfully dubbed “Happy House,” captures what The Perch was created to offer. As the workday winds down, golden-hour light and fresh air set the scene for a drink, conversation, and a chance to stay awhile.
Rather than emulate the high-energy rooftop bars found in larger cities, The Perch has intentionally carved out a quieter identity. Comfortable interiors open to sweeping views, while live music, cocktails, and shareable dishes create an experience that can shift with the occasion.
As The Perch moves into new seasons, its programming and menus will evolve with them. The underlying purpose, however, remains simple: create a place where people can gather, connect, and enjoy Charlottesville from a different point of view.
