Interior designer Kathy Helfrich of JDuce Designs says this redesigned 12-year-old boy’s bedroom adds industrial-hip touches and frees up space for him to hang out with friends or simply spend time reading.

“He likes to bring his buddies over, and he wanted it to look fun and trendy without it being over the top,” Kathy says.

By positioning the bed in the corner, eliminating his unused desk (homework usually takes place in the family office), and fully utilizing closet space as opposed to dressers, Kathy was able to free up real estate, making this small bedroom feel much larger.

“I love the simplicity,” she says.

  • The chunky twin bed was replaced with a sleek but larger full-size bed. The corner placement frees up floor space.
  • Instead of wallpaper, removable wall decals add interest to the walls.
  • A custom-made hat rack was made by local woodworker Chris Dickey of C&S Toolworks.
  • Other items in the room:
    • Wall signs made by Kyla Lee of By Kyla.

    • Custom window treatment: Revolution Performance fabric, made by Window Wares in Castle Rock.

    • Bed: Pottery Barn Kids.

    • Acrylic signs, Pendleton blanket: RH Teen.

    • Black distressed dresser, red locker nightstand: Wayfair.

    • Rug: Ikea.

    • Soccer ball wall mounts: The Container Store.

    • Plus-sign wall decals: Wallternatives.
