Sometimes the best getaway is the one that does not require a flight itinerary or a packed weeklong schedule. For New Braunfels travelers craving a change of scenery without straying too far from home, three Texas destinations are redefining the art of the quick escape: The Albert Hotel in Fredericksburg, Hotel Contessa on the San Antonio River Walk, and The Loren nestled next to Lady Bird Lake in Austin.
Each property delivers something beyond a standard overnight stay. Think attentive service before you even step through the lobby doors, spa treatments that encourage you to fully unplug, dining experiences worth lingering over, and the kind of thoughtful amenities that make a weekend feel restorative instead of rushed.
Fredericksburg, TX
The Albert
At The Albert, luxury arrives with Hill Country ease. Located right off Fredericksburg’s Main Street, the boutique property immediately immerses guests in the charm of the town while still feeling private and elevated. Rachel, the owner of NBTX City Lifestyle, got away for a little staycation. She described arriving to “stunning” grounds and staff who handled everything from opening car doors to greeting guests with local wine.
“It was just open, lovely, clean,” she said. “The hospitality and everything were top-notch.”
That sense of ease carried throughout the stay. The Albert offers four on-site dining concepts, a pool and pool bar, spa services, fitness amenities, and walkable access to Fredericksburg’s shopping, wineries, and restaurants. For Rachel, part of the appeal was realizing there was almost no reason to leave once they checked in.
“You don’t even have to leave the property,” she said. “They have a spa, a pool, a gym, four places to eat, and a bar. Then, within hundreds of feet, you have shopping, wineries, and places to eat. Everything is just right there.”
The hotel also stood out for its pet-friendly approach, something Rachel said instantly made the experience feel more personal. Staff greeted her dog with treats and offered food and water bowls without being asked.
“They were so accommodating,” she said. “Your dog gets treated like family.”
It is those smaller details that elevated the stay from nice to memorable. Plush robes, beautiful room design, thoughtful amenities, and celebratory touches like champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries created a sense of effortless indulgence. Rachel also said their chocolate chip cookies were “the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had in my entire life.”
The property’s on-site dining experiences also left a lasting impression. During their stay, Joel grabbed breakfast from the hotel’s bakery and barbecue concepts and quickly found a favorite in the brisket kolache.
“He said it was the best kolache he’s ever had,” Rachel said. The bakery makes its breads and pastries in-house while incorporating barbecue from Junebug's BBQ.
“The service was amazing,” Rachel said. “Be ready to be pampered and just happy.”
San Antonio, TX
Hotel Contessa
About an hour away, Hotel Contessa offers a different but equally indulgent escape. Set directly on the River Walk, the all-suite hotel leans into upscale comfort with spacious rooms, rooftop amenities, spa experiences, and dining that feels distinctly San Antonio.
For Kelly, editor of NBTX City Lifestyle, the luxury experience started before check-in was even complete. She took the night off for a nice stay on the River Walk. Staff greeted everyone at the valet with warm hospitality, helped with luggage, and immediately created a sense of ease that carried throughout the stay.
Inside the lobby, guests are met with polished interiors and refreshments while checking in. Upstairs, Kelly’s suite overlooked the River Walk, blending city energy with a surprisingly calming atmosphere.
“Everything just felt so Texas, but relaxing and upscale,” she said.
One of the highlights of the stay was the spa experience, which Kelly described as immersive from start to finish. The experience felt intentionally tailored rather than transactional, with plush robes and a glass of Prosecco. The treatment itself felt restorative. Her masseuse, Velia, focused on creating an experience that was both relaxing and personalized.
Dining at the hotel’s Ambler Texas Kitchen + Cocktails continued that same level of hospitality. Kelly enjoyed handcrafted cocktails, knowledgeable recommendations from staff, and live mariachi music that added a memorable local touch to the evening.
“I can’t say that I’ve ever been to a restaurant with a mariachi band walking through serenading people,” she said. “It was so Texas and so fun.”
Like The Albert, Hotel Contessa shines because of how effortless the experience feels. Guests can valet the car and spend the rest of the stay exploring on foot, whether that means strolling the River Walk, enjoying nearby museums, relaxing at the pool, or lingering over dinner and drinks.
“I didn’t have to ask anybody for anything,” Kelly said. “They were able to predict every single need that I had.”
Austin, TX
The Loren Austin
The Loren Hotel Austin brings a quieter kind of luxury to the staycation conversation. Described as an “urban sanctuary,” that framing fits. Set near Lady Bird Lake, the property pairs skyline views with a design-forward atmosphere, floor-to-ceiling windows, natural materials, and suites that feel intentionally restful. Its amenities lean into the elevated but relaxed experience many travelers want from a true escape, with a rooftop pool, spa, fitness center, coffee shop, and Nido, the rooftop restaurant known for sweeping Austin views and seasonal cuisine.
Guests consistently reinforce that polished, low-key indulgence. Many praise the hotel’s calming atmosphere, thoughtful room design, and attentive service. One described the rooftop pool as “a very enjoyable respite,” while another noted that the room decor felt “very custom and intentional.” Others repeatedly mention the balance The Loren strikes between modern luxury and a peaceful, almost retreat-like atmosphere despite being in the middle of Austin.
The Loren offers a different flavor of staycation than Fredericksburg or San Antonio, creating a contemporary escape centered around wellness, design, dining, and skyline views. Between the rooftop experiences, lakefront location, spa offerings, and serene interiors, it feels tailor-made for travelers who want their getaway to feel sophisticated, restorative, and just far enough from home to fully unplug.
A great staycation is not just about changing locations. It is about stepping out of routine long enough to feel refreshed, cared for, and fully present. Whether that means poolside cocktails and Hill Country charm at The Albert Hotel, spa treatments and River Walk evenings at Hotel Contessa, or rooftop views and contemporary calm at The Loren Hotel Austin, each property offers its own version of luxury within easy reach of New Braunfels. Together, they prove that a memorable escape does not have to come with a boarding pass or a long drive home.
