With a seriously state-of-the-art facility to bring residents of Loveland and the surrounding areas the relief they desire, Wards Corner Chiropractic & Sports Rehab lives up to its reputation of serving patients like family.

It’s there you’ll find licensed chiropractor Dr. Douglass Portmann—a Loveland resident specializing in pediatrics, geriatrics and sports injuries at Wards Corner, he’s been serving the health-care needs of the Greater Cincinnati community for more than16 years. His “whole person approach” to wellness has been the key to comfort for many of his patients.

Not exactly sure what a chiropractic approach to health means? In short, it’s rooted in an understanding that the human body can be self-sustaining and even self-healing. Chiropractic treatment aims to keep the body in peak condition by treating physical symptoms naturally, rather than resorting to drugs and medication.

“Chiropractic looks at the body from a musculoskeletal, nervous and nutritional standpoint,” Dr. Portmann explains. “We promote fitness and flexibility as a leader in stopping the degenerative and pain process. The body works as a unit from the brain down.”

While chiropractors may be best known for treating back and neck issues, in reality, they frequently are called upon to address conditions like fibromyalgia, allergies, insomnia and headaches. Frequently, Dr. Portmann also treats TMJ, plantar fasciitis and what most of us know as “tennis elbow” (lateral epicondylitis).

“Because I’m a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), we also treat athletes and ‘weekend warriors’ for all kinds of extremity issues.”

He’s certified in cupping and dry needling, two highly effective techniques becoming more popular these days; Dr. Portmann is also able to utilize laser therapy along with ultrasound and electrical stimulation. More about the details—and benefits—of manipulation, dry needling, cupping, and cold laser therapy follow.

Not to lose sight of chiropractic adjustments, “We still think that’s very important, to keep the spine and connective tissues from becoming degenerative and inflamed,” he stresses.

Dr. Portmann is a member of the American Chiropractic Association, the Ohio State Chiropractic Association, the American Chiropractic Council on Sports & Physical Fitness, the National Strength & Conditioning Association, the Loveland Chamber of Commerce, and was a Loveland Chamber of Commerce board member in 2008-2009.

“I love currently sitting as the President of the Board of Trustees for the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance,” he adds. “As president, I get to work along with other local business leaders to help make the business communities of Loveland, Symmes and Miami Township grow.”

But that’s not all. “I’ve been a proud member of the Loveland community since 2003,” he says. “We raised our daughters here.” He also shares pride in generating more than $800,000 with Loveland’s Amazing Race—an event he founded in in 2006, now celebrating its 15th year and rechristened the Amazing Charity Race. Dr. Portmann is particularly fond of that event’s Halloween edition, which brought 500+ people downtown.

He has a passion for coaching local youth sports programs as well—an interest that began when his own children were team members. But even as his girls went off to college, he continued—he’s currently the girls varsity basketball coach at Clermont Northeastern High School.

One thing’s for sure: on or off the court, Dr. Portmann is busy keeping an eye out for the win—and we can all feel a whole lot better because of that.

TREATMENTS

Techniques can vary depending on many different factors, but here are a few of the most popular at Wards Corner Chiropractic & Sports Rehab.

Manipulation

Chiropractic manipulation is what many likely think of when imagining a chiropractor’s office—pressure is applied to the spine or other part of the body to address alignment issues.

Dry Needling

This technique involves the application of a very fine monofilament needle to muscular tissue, with occasional use of electrical stimulation. Not to be confused with acupuncture, dry needling is performed by specialists with different training and is rooted in Western medicine. It’s commonly used to address pain issues in the shoulder, neck, heel, hip and back.

Cupping

For use in addressing musculoskeletal issues, this relief therapy became known to many at 2016’s Olympic games, when swim team members appeared with small circular welts on their backs—a result of recent cupping therapy. It’s been used by some cultures for more than 3,000 years, although its popularity didn’t take off until celebrity use brought it mainstream. In practice, small cups cover a small area of tissue and utilize a vacuum to remove toxins and inflammation.

Cold Laser Therapy

Low light levels are used in cold laser therapy; as the name implies, the light never becomes intensive enough to heat the skin. Cold laser therapy stimulates tissue and promotes healing for a number of conditions, including helping eliminate pain for acute or chronic conditions such as arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia and more.
