The ABCs of Financial Planning

Christyna S. Lewis offers advice to achieve a high quality of life after retirement while meeting today's financial needs.

Why do you recommend a financial plan?

People need money for basic needs. As a society, we live longer, making it essential to have a plan to ensure that we have a high quality of life beyond our working age.

What was your journey to becoming a financial advisor?

Looking back on my career, I realize that everything has led me to become an Edward Jones financial advisor. I have a degree in International Finance and have passionately educated people on financial literacy. My focus has been on giving people peace of mind, empowering them, and helping them define and align with their financial objectives.

What motivates you to help people with their financial plans?

I can color with all the crayons in the big Crayola box to tailor strategies to meet my clients' objectives. Edward Jones is a Fortune 500 company with top financial analysts and is the largest stakeholder of mutual funds for our clients. The company focuses on the community, which aligns with my values. By creating personalized client advice, I am improving the financial wellness of our community.

Why should people work with a financial advisor?

A financial study shows that people who work with a financial advisor have 3% better annualized returns than people who do not.

How do you differentiate yourself from other financial advisors?

I have spent over 20 years in Houston and have been highly involved in various communities. My goal is to work with entrepreneurs, families, and organizations to handle their money so they can thrive in their businesses and daily lives. I also learn how my clients make decisions about money so I can guide them to a plan that works for their needs.

How do you begin working with a new client?

I take a structured approach. I'll ask my clients questions about their finances and objectives in this deep-dive conversation. These goals might include college, retirement, a once-in-a-lifetime trip, etc. I focus on their purpose and the values that are unique to them. I also work to understand what time frame we are working with and their risk tolerance when it comes to investing. Once I have that wealth of knowledge, I can strategically create their tailored investment plans and present them with choices for them to select. My goal is to act as their guide in the process.

What can clients do if their financial goals change?

This happens frequently. My clients understand that their financial plan is a living strategy. I meet with them frequently to review the plan's performance against their current goals and see if changes are needed.

How can readers get started on a financial plan today if they don't have one?

Start at any time. First, educate yourself on your finances. Secondly, define what is important to accomplish. Be curious about how you interact with money. Try to spend less than you make because having more money gives you better options. Finally, find a financial advisor with the knowledge and empathy to meet your goals.
