A pile of books collecting dust on the desk, taking up essential work space: Clothes tightly shoved in the closet leaving wrinkles when removed: A collection of snacks crowding the pantry shelves that requires digging to find the desired item. Though you may not have each of these in your house, chances are you have at least one area that could use improvement. These cluttered spots remain for longer than most would like to admit, taking up essential space at home and in our minds. Jessica Blad and her team at The Artful Organizer recognize this and offer their clients an alternative - living an organized life that is maintainable year-round. In just one day, the private organizing business transforms homes by implementing new systems and strategies with the customers’ vision at the forefront. The Artful Organizer will not only leave your home looking like a work of art but will instill a sense of hope for the future as well.

What was the inspiration for The Artful Organizer?

The biggest thing we provide people is hope. I had a friend who was in a crisis situation - she had four kids and her pantry was completely out of control. One day, I went in with boxes and bins and helped her. When I was done, she started to cry and said ‘I changed her life.’ I had a light bulb go off and thought I would really enjoy doing this regularly.

What makes the organization process effective?

We create a system our client can maintain and make sure it is beautiful - that’s really important to us. We do an online consultation with clients beforehand where we determine what needs to be done and send over design examples so they can choose their vision. Then we take over from there and are able to actualize that vision in one day. By the time we leave, everything is perfect. We even take the trash and donations with us.

What components of an organizational system make it maintainable?

Creating a simple system makes all the difference. It’s important to find out how the household is and how everything can be communicated and understood by the entire family. Labeling everything helps a lot, but the whole household must be on board for it to last.

What are common misconceptions about decluttering?

Most people are afraid an organizer will say you have to be a minimalist to keep a house in check. We don’t tell you to get rid of your stuff, we just find a place for it to go. Most clients aren’t disorganized people, they’re just busy and need to outsource it. So, we offer a no judgment zone to get it done.

What advice would you give someone who feels overwhelmed about organizing?

Of course you do! It’s a natural feeling, but the most important thing is to do one step at a time instead of looking at the whole mountain. Pick something very small and conquer it, then move on to the next thing. Over time, you will see a big difference.
